The global variable n_krcvqs stores the sum of the number of kernel receive queues of VLs 0-7 which the user can pass to the driver through the module parameter array krcvqs which is of type unsigned integer. If the user passes large value(s) into krcvqs parameter array, it can cause an arithmetic overflow while calculating n_krcvqs which is also of type unsigned int. The overflow results in an incorrect value of n_krcvqs which can lead to kernel crash while loading the driver. Fix by changing the data type of n_krcvqs to unsigned long. This patch also changes the data type of other variables that get their values from n_krcvqs. Kernel receive queues oversubscribe CPU cores on multi-HFI systems. To prevent this, the kernel receive queues are separated onto different cores, and the SDMA engine interrupts are constrained to a lesser number of cores. hfi1s_on_numa_node*krcvqs is the number of CPU cores that are reserved for kernel receive queues for all HFIs. Each HFI initializes its kernel receive queues to one of the reserved CPU cores. If there ends up being 0 CPU cores leftover for SDMA engines, use the same CPU cores as receive contexts. In addition, general and control contexts are assigned to their own CPU core, however, both types of contexts tend to have low traffic. To save CPU cores, collapse general and control contexts to one CPU core for all HFI units. This change prevents SDMA engine interrupts from wrapping around general contexts. When HFI units get initialized, they each use their own mask copy for affinity assignments. On a multi-HFI system, affinity assignments overbook CPU cores as each HFI doesn't have knowledge of affinity assignments for other HFI units. Therefore, some CPU cores are never used for interrupt handlers in systems with high number of CPU cores per NUMA node. For multi-HFI systems, SDMA engine interrupt assignments start all over from the first CPU in the local NUMA node after the first HFI initialization. This change allows assignments to continue where the last HFI unit left off. Add global structure for affinity assignments for multiple HFIs to share affinity mask. The deletion of a cdev is not a fence for holding off references to the structure. The driver attempts to delete the cdev and then proceeds to free the parent structure, the hfi1_devdata, or dd. This can potentially lead to a kernel panic in situations where a user has an FD for the cdev open, and the pci device gets removed. If the user then closes the FD there will be a NULL dereference when trying to do put on the cdev's kobject. Fix this by pointing the cdev's kobject.parent at a new kobject embedded in its parent structure. Also take a reference when the device is opened and put it back when it is closed. If one iteration of the loop causes an error return and a later iteration doesn't, the later iteration causes the earlier error condition to be lost. This could result in driver probe succeeding when it should have failed. Therefore save off the error return in the loop itself rather than outside the loop. hrtimer functions do not guarantee serialization, so we extend the cca_timer_lock to cover the hrtimer_forward_now() in the hrtimer callback handler and the hrtimer_start() in process_becn(). Clock and data recovery mechanisms (CDRs) in active QSFP modules can be turned on or off to improve the bit error rate observed on the channel. Signal integrity and bit error rate requirements require us to always turn on any CDRs present in low power cables (power dissipation 2.5W or lower). However, we adhere to the platform designer's settings (provided in the platform configuration) for higher power cables (dissipation 3.5W or higher) if the platform designer has determined that the platform requires the CDRs to be turned on (or off) and is capable of supplying and cooling the higher power modules. This patch also introduces the get_qsfp_power_class function to centralize the bit twiddling required to determine the QSFP power class across the code. Reusing this function improves the readability of code that depends on knowing the power class of the cable, such as the active and optical channel tuning algorithm. rdi->ports has memory allocated in rvt_alloc_device(), but does not get freed because the hfi1 and qib drivers drivers call ib_dealloc_device() directly instead of going through rdmavt. The kernel memcpy is faster than a cacheless copy. However, if too much of the L3 cache is overwritten by one-time copies then overall bandwidth suffers. Implement an adaptive scheme where full page copies are tracked and if the number of unique entries are larger than a threshold, verbs will use a cacheless copy. Tracked entries are gradually cleaned, allowing memcpy to resume once the larger copies have stopped. This patch implements LED beaconing for maintenance. A MAD packet with the LEDInfo attribute set to 1 will enable LED beaconing with a duty cycle of 2s on and 1.5s off. A MAD packet with the LEDInfo attribute set to 0 will disable beaconing and return the LED to normal operation. The driver crashes when loaded with parameter rcvhdrcnt=2097152. The root cause was that rcvhdrcnt was initially a 32 bit variable and its value was assigned to a 16 bit variable, truncating the upper 16 bits. This patch prevents the user from passing a value for rcvhdrcnt greater than 16352 (Maximum number for rcvhdrcnt). This patch unifies the affinity support for CPU and IRQ allocations into a single code base. The goal is to allow the driver to make intelligent placement decision based on an overall view of processes and IRQs across as much of the driver as possible. Pulling all the scattered affinity code into a single code base lays the ground work for accomplishing the above goal. For example, previous implementations made user process placement decision solely based on other user processes. This algorithm is limited as it did not take into account IRQ placement and could result in overloading certain CPUs. A single code base also provides a much easier way to maintain and debug any performance issues related to affinity. hfi1 HW has a high PCIe ASPM L1 exit latency and also advertises an acceptable latency less than actual ASPM latencies. Additional mechanisms than those provided by BIOS/OS are therefore required to enable/disable ASPM for hfi1 to provide acceptable power/performance trade offs. This patch adds this support. By means of a module parameter ASPM can be either (a) always enabled (power save mode) (b) always disabled (performance mode) (c) enabled/disabled dynamically. The dynamic mode implements two heuristics to alleviate possible problems with high ASPM L1 exit latency. ASPM is normally enabled but is disabled if (a) there are any active user space PSM contexts, or (b) for verbs, ASPM is disabled as interrupt activity for a context starts to increase. A few more points about the verbs implementation. In order to reduce lock/cache contention between multiple verbs contexts, some processing is done at the context layer before contending for device layer locks. ASPM is disabled when two interrupts for a context happen within 1 millisec. A timer is scheduled which will re-enable ASPM after 1 second should the interrupt activity cease. Normally, every interrupt, or interrupt-pair should push the timer out further. However, since this might increase the processing load per interrupt, pushing the timer out is postponed for half a second. If after half a second we get two interrupts within 1 millisec the timer is pushed out by another second. Finally, the kernel ASPM API is not used in this patch. This is because this patch does several non-standard things as SW workarounds for HW issues. As mentioned above, it enables ASPM even when advertised actual latencies are greater than acceptable latencies. Also, whereas the kernel API only allows drivers to disable ASPM from driver probe, this patch enables/disables ASPM directly from interrupt context. Due to these reasons the kernel ASPM API was not used.
