The long noops ("NOPL") are supposed to be detected by family >= 6. Unfortunately, several non-Intel x86 implementations, both hardware and software, don't obey this dictum. Instead, probe for NOPL directly by executing a NOPL instruction and see if we get #UD. Signed-off-by: NH. Peter Anvin <hpa@zytor.com>

AMD only supports "syscall" from 32-bit compat usermode. Intel and Centaur(?) only support "sysenter" from 32-bit compat usermode. Set the X86 feature bits accordingly, and set up the vdso in accordance with those bits. On the offchance we run on in a 64-bit environment which supports neither syscall nor sysenter from 32-bit mode, then fall back to the int $0x80 vdso. Update arch/x86's use of page-aligned variables. The change to arch/x86/xen/mmu.c fixes an actual bug, but the rest are cleanups and to set a precedent. This removes a pile of buggy open-coded implementations of savesegment and loadsegment. (They are buggy because they don't have memory barriers to prevent them from being reordered with respect to memory accesses.)
