Currently all radios receive all traffic on the simulated air if they are tuned to the same channel. This patch introduces the concept of grouping, which allows to assign a radio to certain group. Only radios in the same group can 'see' each other. Each bit in /debug/ieee80211/phy*/hwsim/group represents one group. By default all radios belong to the same group "1", e.g. bit 1 is set. Additionally a radio can belong to several groups. Signed-off-by: NDaniel Wagner <wagi@monom.org> Signed-off-by: NJohn W. Linville <linville@tuxdriver.com>

When we aren't doing anything in mac80211, we can turn off much of the hardware, depending on the driver/hw. Not doing anything, aka being idle, means: * no monitor interfaces * no AP/mesh/wds interfaces * any station interfaces are in DISABLED state * any IBSS interfaces aren't trying to be in a network * we aren't trying to scan By creating a new function that verifies these conditions and calling it at strategic points where the states of those conditions change, we can easily make mac80211 tell the driver when we are idle to save power. Additionally, this fixes a small quirk where a recalculated powersave state is passed to the driver even if the hardware is about to stopped completely. This patch intentionally doesn't touch radio_enabled because that is currently implemented to be a soft rfkill which is inappropriate here when we need to be able to wake up with low latency. One thing I'm not entirely sure about is this: phy0: device no longer idle - in use wlan0: direct probe to AP 00:11:24:91:07:4d try 1 wlan0 direct probe responded wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:11:24:91:07:4d wlan0: authenticated > phy0: device now idle > phy0: device no longer idle - in use wlan0: associate with AP 00:11:24:91:07:4d wlan0: RX AssocResp from 00:11:24:91:07:4d (capab=0x401 status=0 aid=1) wlan0: associated Is it appropriate to go into idle state for a short time when we have just authenticated, but not associated yet? This happens only with the userspace SME, because we cannot really know how long it will wait before asking us to associate. Would going idle after a short timeout be more appropriate? We may need to revisit this, depending on what happens. Signed-off-by: NJohannes Berg <johannes@sipsolutions.net> Signed-off-by: NJohn W. Linville <linville@tuxdriver.com>

The config_interface method is a little strange, it contains the BSSID and beacon updates, while bss_info_changed contains most other BSS information for each interface. We currently have two beacon interval configuration knobs: hw.conf.beacon_int and vif.bss_info.beacon_int. This is rather confusing, even though the former is used when we beacon ourselves and the latter when we are associated to an AP. This just deprecates the hw.conf.beacon_int setting in favour of always using vif.bss_info.beacon_int. Since it touches all the beaconing IBSS code anyway, we can also add support for the cfg80211 IBSS beacon interval configuration easily. NOTE: The hw.conf.beacon_int setting is retained for now due to drivers still using it -- I couldn't untangle all drivers, some are updated in this patch. This patch removes all the virtual A-MPDU-queue bookkeeping from mac80211. Curiously, iwlwifi already does its own bookkeeping, so it doesn't require much changes except where it needs to handle starting and stopping the queues in mac80211. To handle the queue stop/wake properly, we rewrite the software queue number for aggregation frames and internally to iwlwifi keep track of the queues that map into the same AC queue, and only talk to mac80211 about the AC queue. The implementation requires calling two new functions, iwl_stop_queue and iwl_wake_queue instead of the mac80211 counterparts. This introduces a debugfs file (ieee80211/phy#/hwsim/ps) that can be used to force a simulated radio into power save mode. Following values can be written into this file to change PS mode: 0 = power save disabled (constantly awake) 1 = power save enabled (drop all frames; do not send PS-Poll) 2 = power save enabled (send PS-Poll frames automatically to receive buffered unicast frames); not yet fully implemented 3 = manual PS-Poll trigger (send a single PS-Poll frame) Two different behavior for power save mode processing can be tested: - move between modes 1 and 0 (i.e., receive all buffered frames at a time) - move to mode 1 and use manual PS-Poll frames (write 3 to the 'ps' debugfs file) to fetch power save buffered frames one at a time Mode 2 (automatic PS-Poll) does not yet parse Beacon frames, but eventually, it should take a look at TIM IE and send PS-Poll if a traffic bit is set for our AID. Currently, virtual interface pointers passed to drivers might be from monitor interfaces and as such completely uninitialised because we do not tell the driver about monitor interfaces when those are created. Instead of passing them, we should therefore indicate to the driver that there is no information; do that by passing a NULL value and adjust drivers to cope with it. As a result, some mac80211 API functions also need to cope with a NULL vif pointer so drivers can still call them unconditionally. Also, when injecting frames we really don't want to pass NULL all the time, if we know we are the source address of a frame and have a local interface for that address, we can to use that interface. This also helps with processing the frame correctly for that interface which will help the 802.11w implementation. It's not entirely correct for VLANs or WDS interfaces because there the MAC address isn't unique, but it's already a lot better than what we do now. Finally, when injecting without a matching local interface, don't assign sequence numbers at all. Signed-off-by: NJohannes Berg <johannes@sipsolutions.net> Signed-off-by: NJohn W. mac80211-hwsim is a debugging tool for mac80211, and as such it can very well verify that mac80211 isn't passing junk to drivers, especially the vif pointer is prone to this because for vlan interfaces the AP interface pointer needs to be passed. This makes mac80211-hwsim add a magic cookie to the private vif area and verify it whenever an operation is called that gets a vif pointer. I was looking at this out of interest, but I'm in no way familiar with the code. Looks to me that the error handling code in mac80211_hwsim is awkward. Which leads to it calling ieee80211_unregister_hw even when ieee80211_register_hw failed. The function has a for loop where it generates all simulated radios. when something fails, the error handling will call mac80211_hwsim_free which frees all simulated radios who's pointer isn't zero. However the information stored is insufficient to determine whether or not the call to ieee80211_register_hw succeeded or not for a specific radio. The included patch makes init_mac80211_hwsim clean up the current simulated radio, and then calls into mac80211_hwsim_free to clean up all the radios that did succeed. This however doesn't explain why the rate control registration failed.. build tested this, but had some problems reproducing the original problem.
