The current print_context_stack helper that does the stack walking job is good for usual stacktraces as it walks through all the stack and reports even addresses that look unreliable, which is nice when we don't have frame pointers for example. But we have users like perf that only require reliable stacktraces, and those may want a more adapted stack walker, so lets make this function a callback in stacktrace_ops that users can tune for their needs. Impact: Reduce future memory usage, use new cpumask API. (Eventually, cpumask_var_t will be allocated based on nr_cpu_ids, not NR_CPUS). Convert kernel trace functions to use struct cpumask API: 1) Use cpumask_copy/cpumask_test_cpu/for_each_cpu. 2) Use cpumask_var_t and alloc_cpumask_var/free_cpumask_var everywhere. 3) Use on_each_cpu instead of playing with current->cpus_allowed. Impact: cleanup, move all hrtimer processing into hardirq context This is an attempt at removing some of the hrtimer complexity by reducing the number of callback modes to 1. This means that all hrtimer callback functions will be ran from HARD-irq context. I went through all the 30 odd hrtimer callback functions in the kernel and saw only one that I'm not quite sure of, which is the one in net/can/bcm.c - hence I'm CC-ing the folks responsible for that code. Furthermore, the hrtimer core now calls callbacks directly with IRQs disabled in case you try to enqueue an expired timer. If this timer is a periodic timer (which should use hrtimer_forward() to advance its time) then it might be possible to end up in an inf. recursive loop due to the fact that hrtimer_forward() doesn't round up to the next timer granularity, and therefore keeps on calling the callback - obviously this needs a fix. Aside from that, this seems to compile and actually boot on my dual core test box - although I'm sure there are some bugs in, me not hitting any makes me certain :-) Signed-off-by: NPeter Zijlstra <a.p.zijlstra@chello.nl> Signed-off-by: NIngo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu>

Impact: extend the ->init() method with the ability to fail This bring a way to know if the initialization of a tracer successed. A tracer must return 0 on success and a traditional error (ie: -ENOMEM) if it fails. If a tracer fails to init, it is free to print a detailed warn. The tracing api will not and switch to a new tracer will just return the error from the init callback. Note: this will be used for the return tracer. Impact: per CPU hrtimers can be migrated from a dead CPU The hrtimer code has no knowledge about per CPU timers, but we need to prevent the migration of such timers and warn when such a timer is active at migration time. Explicitely mark the timers as per CPU and use a more understandable mode descriptor for the interrupts safe unlocked callback mode, which is used by hrtimer_sleeper and the scheduler code. * This patch replaces the dangerous lvalue version of cpumask_of_cpu with new cpumask_of_cpu_ptr macros. These are patterned after the node_to_cpumask_ptr macros. In general terms, if there is a cpumask_of_cpu_map[] then a pointer to the cpumask_of_cpu_map[cpu] entry is used. The cpumask_of_cpu_map is provided when there is a large NR_CPUS count, reducing greatly the amount of code generated and stack space used for cpumask_of_cpu(). The pointer to the cpumask_t value is needed for calling set_cpus_allowed_ptr() to reduce the amount of stack space needed to pass the cpumask_t value. If there isn't a cpumask_of_cpu_map[], then a temporary variable is declared and filled in with value from cpumask_of_cpu(cpu) as well as a pointer variable pointing to this temporary variable. Afterwards, the pointer is used to reference the cpumask value. The compiler will optimize out the extra dereference through the pointer as well as the stack space used for the pointer, resulting in identical code. A good example of the orthogonal usages is in net/sunrpc/svc.c: case SVC_POOL_PERCPU: { unsigned int cpu = m->pool_to[pidx]; cpumask_of_cpu_ptr(cpumask, cpu); *oldmask = current->cpus_allowed; set_cpus_allowed_ptr(current, cpumask); return 1; } case SVC_POOL_PERNODE: { unsigned int node = m->pool_to[pidx]; node_to_cpumask_ptr(nodecpumask, node); *oldmask = current->cpus_allowed; set_cpus_allowed_ptr(current, nodecpumask); return 1; } Signed-off-by: NMike Travis <travis@sgi.com> Signed-off-by: NIngo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu>

add kernel backtracing to the sysprof tracer. change the format of the data, so that type=0 means beginning of stack trace, 1 means kernel address, 2 means user address, and 3 means end of trace. EIP addresses are no longer distinguished from return addresses, mostly because sysprof userspace doesn't make use of it.
