Some watchdog drivers initialize global spinlocks in module's init function which is tolerable, but some do it in PCI probe function. So, switch to static initialization to fix theoretical bugs and, more importantly, stop giving people bad examples. It seems that some watchdog drivers are doing following mistake: rv = misc_register(); if (rv < 0) return rv; rv = request_region(); if (rv < 0) { misc_deregister(); return rv; } But, right after misc_register() returns, misc device can be opened and ioctls interacting with hardware issued, and driver can do outb() to port it doesn't own yet, because request_region() is still pending. Here is my patch, compile-tested only. Signed-off-by: NAlexey Dobriyan <adobriyan@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: NWim Van Sebroeck <wim@iguana.be>

- Use timer macros to set function and data members and to modify expiration time. - Use DEFINE_TIMER for single (platform dependent) watchdog timers and do not init them at run-time in these cases. - del_timer_sync is common in most cases -- we want to wait for timer function if it's still running. Mark the static struct file_operations in drivers/char as const. Making them const prevents accidental bugs, and moves them to the .rodata section so that they no longer do any false sharing; in addition with the proper debug option they are then protected against corruption.. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
