The current PS3 VRAM driver uses msleep() to wait for completion of RSX DMA transfers between system memory and VRAM. Depending on the system timing, the processing delay and overhead of this msleep() call can significantly impact VRAM driver IO. To avoid the condition, add a short duration (200 usec max) udelay() polling loop before entering the msleep() polling loop. In the near future, the driver core is going to not allow direct access to the driver_data pointer in struct device. Instead, the functions dev_get_drvdata() and dev_set_drvdata() should be used. These functions have been around since the beginning, so are backwards compatible with all older kernel versions. Remove the mutex serializing access to the cache. Instead, queue up new requests on a bio_list if the driver is busy. This improves sequential write performance by ca. 2%. Setting ->owner as done currently (pde->owner = THIS_MODULE) is racy as correctly noted at bug #12454. Someone can lookup entry with NULL ->owner, thus not pinning enything, and release it later resulting in module refcount underflow. We can keep ->owner and supply it at registration time like ->proc_fops and ->data. But this leaves ->owner as easy-manipulative field (just one C assignment) and somebody will forget to unpin previous/pin current module when switching ->owner. ->proc_fops is declared as "const" which should give some thoughts. ->read_proc/->write_proc were just fixed to not require ->owner for protection. rmmod'ed directories will be empty and return "." and ".." -- no harm. And directories with tricky enough readdir and lookup shouldn't be modular. We definitely don't want such modular code. Removing ->owner will also make PDE smaller. So, let's nuke it. Convert the PS3 Video RAM Storage Driver from an MTD driver to a plain block device driver. The ps3vram driver exposes unused video RAM on the PS3 as a block device suitable for storage or swap. Fast data transfer is achieved using a local cache in system RAM and DMA transfers via the GPU. The new driver is ca. 50% faster for reading, and ca. 10% for writing.
