764e16a3 changed perf-record to create events disabled by default and enable them once perf initializations are done. This setting was dropped by 0f82ebc4. Now perf events are once again generated during perf's initialization phase (e.g., generating maps). As an example, perf opens a lot of files at startup. Unpatched: perf record -e syscalls:sys_enter_open -ga -fo /tmp/perf.data -- sleep 1 [ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ] [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.087 MB /tmp/perf.data (~3798 samples) ] Using perf-script to look at the samples shows the perf command generating 563 of the 566 total events. Patched: perf record -e syscalls:sys_enter_open -ga -fo /tmp/perf.data -- sleep 1 [ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ] [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.028 MB /tmp/perf.data (~1206 samples) ] Using perf-script to look at the samples does not show perf command. Rename perf_target__no_{cpu,task} to perf_target__has_{cpu,task} because it's more intuitive and easy to parse (for human beings) when used with negation. The names are came out from David Ahern. It is intended to be a mechanical substitution without any functional change. The perf_target__none remains unchanged since I couldn't find a right name and it is hardly used with negation. In perf_event__parse_sample(), the array variable was not incremented by the amount of data used by the raw_data. That was okay until we added PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_STACK which depends on the array variable pointing to the beginning of the branch stack data. But that was not the case if branch stack was combined with raw mode sampling. That led to bogus branch stack addresses and count. The bug would show up with: $ perf record -R -b foo This patch fixes the problem by correctly moving the array pointer forward for RAW samples. When event group is enabled for forked task (i.e. no target task/cpu was specified) all events were disabled and marked ->enable_on_exec. However they wouldn't be counted at all since only group leader will be enabled on exec actually. In contrast to perf stat, perf record doesn't have a real problem as it enables all the event before proceeding. But it needs to be fixed anyway IMHO. The following filters are available: - any : any type of branches - any_call : any function call or system call - any_ret : any function return or system call return - any_ind : any indirect branch - u: only when the branch target is at the user level - k: only when the branch target is in the kernel - hv: only when the branch target is in the hypervisor Filters can be combined by passing a comma separated list to the option: $ perf record -b any_call,u -e cycles:u branchy Signed-off-by: NRoberto Agostino Vitillo <ravitillo@lbl.gov> Signed-off-by: NStephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Cc: peterz@infradead.org Cc: acme@redhat.com Cc: robert.richter@amd.com Cc: ming.m.lin@intel.com Cc: andi@firstfloor.org Cc: asharma@fb.com Cc: vweaver1@eecs.utk.edu Cc: khandual@linux.vnet.ibm.com Cc: dsahern@gmail.com Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1328826068-11713-13-git-send-email-eranian@google.comSigned-off-by: NIngo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu>

This patch fixes an issue where perf report shows nan% for certain perf.data files. The below is from a report for a do_fork probe: -nan% sshd [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork -nan% packagekitd [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork -nan% dbus-daemon [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork -nan% bash [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork A git bisect shows commit f3bda2c9 as the cause. However, looking back through the git history, I saw commit 640c03ce which seems to have removed the required initialization for perf_sample->period. The problem only started showing after commit f3bda2c9. The below patch re-introduces the initialization and it fixes the problem for me. With the below patch, for the same perf.data: 73.08% bash [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork 8.97% 11-dhclient [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork 6.41% sshd [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork 3.85% 20-chrony [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork 2.56% sendmail [kernel.kallsyms] [k] do_fork This patch applies over current linux-tip commit 9949284. The problem is that when SAMPLE_PERIOD is not set, the kernel generates a number of samples in proportion to an event's period. Number of these samples may be too big and the kernel throttles all samples above a defined limit. E.g.: I want to trace when a process sleeps. I created a process which sleeps for 1ms and for 4ms. perf got 100 events in both cases. swapper 0 [000] 1141.371830: sched_stat_sleep: comm=foo pid=1801 delay=1386750 [ns] swapper 0 [000] 1141.369444: sched_stat_sleep: comm=foo pid=1801 delay=4499585 [ns] In the first case a kernel want to send 4499585 events and in the second case it wants to send 1386750 events. perf-reports shows that process sleeps in both places equal time. Instead of this we can get only one sample with an attribute period. As result we have less data transferring between kernel and user-space and we avoid throttling of samples. The patch "events: Don't divide events if it has field period" added a kernel part of this functionality. The __perf_evsel__open routing was grouping just the threads for that specific events per cpu when we want to group all threads in all events to the first fd opened on that cpu. So pass the xyarray with the first event, where the other events will be able to get that first per cpu fd. At some point top and record will switch to using perf_evlist__open that takes care of this detail and probably will also handle the fallback from hw to soft counters, etc. Reported-by: NDeng-Cheng Zhu <dczhu@mips.com> Tested-by: NDeng-Cheng Zhu <dczhu@mips.com> Cc: David Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com> Cc: Frederic Weisbecker <fweisbec@gmail.com> Cc: Mike Galbraith <efault@gmx.de> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/n/tip-ebm34rh098i9y9v4cytfdp0x@git.kernel.orgSigned-off-by: NArnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

Currently, analyzing PPC data files on x86 the cpu field is always 0 and the tid and pid are backwards. For example, analyzing a PPC file on PPC the pid/tid fields show: rsyslogd 1210/1212 and analyzing the same PPC file using an x86 perf binary shows: rsyslogd 1212/1210 The problem is that the swap_op method for samples is perf_event__all64_swap which assumes all elements in the sample_data struct are u64s. cpu, tid and pid are u32s and need to be handled individually. Given that the swap is done before the sample is parsed, the simplest solution is to undo the 64-bit swap of those elements when the sample is parsed and do the proper swap. The RAW data field is generic and perf cannot have programmatic knowledge of how to treat that data. Instead a warning is given to the user. Thanks to Anton Blanchard for providing a data file for a mult-CPU PPC system so I could verify the fix for the CPU fields. v3 -> v4: - fixed use of WARN_ONCE v2 -> v3: - used WARN_ONCE for message regarding raw data - removed struct wrapper around union - fixed whitespace issues v1 -> v2: - added a union for undoing the byte-swap on u64 and redoing swap on u32's to address compiler errors (see git commit 65014ab3) Cc: Anton Blanchard <anton@samba.org> Cc: Frederic Weisbecker <fweisbec@gmail.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1315321946-16993-1-git-send-email-dsahern@gmail.comSigned-off-by: NDavid Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: NArnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

Not finding die(), which it shouldn't anyway, not good to just stop the world because some particular perf.data file is invalid, just propagate the error to the caller. . Not finding perf_sample_size: fix it by moving it from event.c to evsel, where it belongs, as most cases are moving to operate on an evsel object.o One of the fixed problems: [root@emilia ~]# python >>> import perf Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> ImportError: /home/acme/git/build/perf/python/perf.so: undefined symbol: perf_sample_size >>> [root@emilia ~]# Cc: Frederic Weisbecker <fweisbec@gmail.com> Cc: Mike Galbraith <efault@gmx.de> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/n/tip-1hkj7b2cvgbfnoizsekjb6c9@git.kernel.orgSigned-off-by: NArnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf_evsel__alloc_fd allocates an array of file descriptors with the memory initialized to 0. The array has dimensions for cpus and threads. Later, __perf_evsel__open calls sys_perf_event_open for each cpu and thread dimensions. If the open fails for any of the cpus or threads then the fd's for this event are closed and the fd entry in the array is set to -1. Now, if the first attempt fails for the event (e.g., the event is not supported) the remaining dimensions (cpu > 0 and thread > 0) are not touched and left at the initialized value of 0. builtin-stat catches ENOENT and ENOSYS failures and allows the command to continue. The end result is that stat attempts to read from an fd of 0 which of course is stdin and so the command hangs until you type ctrl-D. Resolve by initializing the array to -1 since an fd < 0 is already handled. Ensure the size of the dynamic fields such as callchains or raw events don't overlap the whole event boundaries. perf stat doesn't mmap and its perfectly fine for it to use task-bound counters with inheritance. So set the attr.inherit on the caller and leave the syscall itself to validate it. When the mmap fails perf_evlist__mmap will just emit a warning if this is the failure reason. So that we can reuse things like the id to attr lookup routine (perf_evlist__id2evsel) that uses a hash table instead of the linear lookup done in the older perf_header_attr routines, etc. Also to make evsels/evlist more pervasive an API, simplyfing using the emerging perf lib. cc: Arun Sharma <arun@sharma-home.net> Cc: Frederic Weisbecker <fweisbec@gmail.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Cc: Mike Galbraith <efault@gmx.de> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Cc: Tom Zanussi <tzanussi@gmail.com> LKML-Reference: <new-submission> Signed-off-by: NArnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

The kernel refuses mmapping an event with the inherit flag set for something that is systemwide (cpu == -1), and the evsel layer got this reversed at some point, fix it. The symtom was that the --pid and --tid parameters for 'perf record' and 'perf top' returned with -EINVAL, like: # /tmp/build-perf/perf record -v -fo/tmp/perf.data -p 1042 Warning: ... trying to fall back to cpu-clock-ticks Fatal: failed to mmap with 22 (Invalid argument) Reported-by: NDavid Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com> Cc: Frederic Weisbecker <fweisbec@gmail.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Cc: Mike Galbraith <efault@gmx.de> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Cc: Tom Zanussi <tzanussi@gmail.com> LKML-Reference: <new-submission> Signed-off-by: NArnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

This patch changes the way perf stat prints event names at the end of a run. Until now, it was trying to reconstruct the event name from its encoding. The problem is that it would only print generic events without their modifiers (u, k, pp). This patch saves the event name as passed by the user in the evsel struct and uses it to print the final event name. This would also work in case perf is linked with a library (such as libpfm4) which provides full PMU event tables. $ perf stat -e cycles:u,cycles:k date Wed Feb 16 14:58:52 CET 2011 Performance counter stats for 'date': 568600 cycles:u 2779715 cycles:k 0.001908182 seconds time elapsed Cc: Arun Sharma <arun@sharma-home.net> Cc: David S. This patch adds the ability to filter monitoring based on container groups (cgroups) for both perf stat and perf record. It is possible to monitor multiple cgroup in parallel. There is one cgroup per event. The cgroups to monitor are passed via a new -G option followed by a comma separated list of cgroup names. The cgroup filesystem has to be mounted. Given a cgroup name, the perf tool finds the corresponding directory in the cgroup filesystem and opens it. It then passes that file descriptor to the kernel. Example: $ perf stat -B -a -e cycles:u,cycles:u,cycles:u -G test1,,test2 -- sleep 1 Performance counter stats for 'sleep 1': 2,368,667,414 cycles test1 2,369,661,459 cycles <not counted> cycles test2 1.001856890 seconds time elapsed Signed-off-by: NStephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Signed-off-by: NPeter Zijlstra <a.p.zijlstra@chello.nl> LKML-Reference: <4d590290.825bdf0a.7d0a.4890@mx.google.com> Signed-off-by: NIngo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu>

Introduced in: c52b12ed, when this sequence: count[0] = count[1] = count[2] = 0; Was replaced with: aggr->val = 0; Which is equivalent to zeroing just the first entry in the 'count' array.
