This UML breakage: linux-2.6.30.1[3800] vsyscall fault (exploit attempt?) ip:ffffffffff600000 cs:33 sp:7fbfb9c498 ax:ffffffffff600000 si:0 di:606790 linux-2.6.30.1[3856] vsyscall fault (exploit attempt?) ip:ffffffffff600000 cs:33 sp:7fbfb13168 ax:ffffffffff600000 si:0 di:606790 Is caused by commit 3ae36655 ("x86-64: Rework vsyscall emulation and add vsyscall= parameter") - the vsyscall emulation code is not fully cooked yet as UML relies on some rather fragile SIGSEGV semantics. Linus suggested in https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/8/9/376 to default to vsyscall=native for now, this patch implements that. With commit c814a4c7, the meaning of tempX_max was changed. It no longer returns the value of bits 8:15 of MSR_IA32_TEMPERATURE_TARGET, but instead returns the value of CPU threshold register T1. tempX_max_hyst was added to reflect the value of temperature threshold register T0. As it turns out, T0 and T1 are used on some systems, presumably by the BIOS. Also, T0 and T1 don't have a well defined meaning. The thresholds may be used as upper or lower limits, and it is not guaranteed that T0 <= T1. Thus, the new attribute mapping does not reflect the actual usage of the threshold registers. Also, register contents are changed during runtime by an entity other than the hwmon driver, meaning the values cached by the driver do not reflect actual register contents. Revert most of c814a4c7 to address the problem. Support for T0 and T1 will be added back in with a separate commit, using new attribute names. Revert the post-3.0 commit 82f9d486 ("memcg: add memory.vmscan_stat"). The implementation of per-memcg reclaim statistics violates how memcg hierarchies usually behave: hierarchically. The reclaim statistics are accounted to child memcgs and the parent hitting the limit, but not to hierarchy levels in between. Usually, hierarchical statistics are perfectly recursive, with each level representing the sum of itself and all its children. Since this exports statistics to userspace, this may lead to confusion and problems with changing things after the release, so revert it now, we can try again later. The CONFIG_RELOCATABLE code tries to align the unpack destination to the value of 'kernel_alignment' in the setup_hdr. If that's 0, it tries to unpack to address 0, which in fact causes the gunzip code to call 'error("Out of memory while allocating output buffer")'. The bootloader (ie. the lguest Launcher in this case) should be doing setting this field; the normal bzImage is 16M, we can use the same. There are three choices: vsyscall=native: Vsyscalls are native code that issues the corresponding syscalls. vsyscall=emulate (default): Vsyscalls are emulated by instruction fault traps, tested in the bad_area path. The actual contents of the vsyscall page is the same as the vsyscall=native case except that it's marked NX. This way programs that make assumptions about what the code in the page does will not be confused when they read that code. vsyscall=none: Trying to execute a vsyscall will segfault. Currently the use of pm_runtime_put_sync() is not safe from interrupts-disabled context because rpm_idle() will release the spinlock and enable interrupts for the idle callbacks. This enables interrupts during a time where interrupts were expected to be disabled, and can have strange side effects on drivers that expected interrupts to be disabled. This is not a bug since the documentation clearly states that only _put_sync_suspend() is safe in IRQ-safe mode. However, pm_runtime_put_sync() could be made safe when in IRQ-safe mode by releasing the spinlock but not re-enabling interrupts, which is what this patch aims to do. Problem was found when using some buggy drivers that set pm_runtime_irq_safe() and used _put_sync() in interrupts-disabled context. There are always questions about why CFQ is idling on various conditions. Recent ones is Christoph asking again why to idle on REQ_NOIDLE. His assertion is that XFS is relying more and more on workqueues and is concerned that CFQ idling on IO from every workqueue will impact XFS badly. So he suggested that I add some more documentation about CFQ idling and that can provide more clarity on the topic and also gives an opprotunity to poke a hole in theory and lead to improvements. So here is my attempt at that. Any comments are welcome. Signed-off-by: NVivek Goyal <vgoyal@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: NJens Axboe <jaxboe@fusionio.com>
