While looking at xstate.h it took me some time to realize that 'xstate_fault' uses 'err' as a silent parameter. This is not obvious at the call site, at all. Make it an explicit macro argument, so that the syntactic connection is easier to see. Also explain xstate_fault() a bit. So the handling of init_xstate_ctx has a layering violation: both 'struct xsave_struct' and 'union thread_xstate' have a 'struct i387_fxsave_struct' member: xsave_struct::i387 thread_xstate::fxsave The handling of init_xstate_ctx is generic, it is used on all CPUs, with or without XSAVE instruction. So it's confusing how the generic code passes around and handles an XSAVE specific format. What we really want is for init_xstate_ctx to be a proper fpstate and we use its ::fxsave and ::xsave members, as appropriate. Since the xsave_struct::i387 and thread_xstate::fxsave aliases each other this is not a functional problem. So implement this, and move init_xstate_ctx to the generic FPU code in the process. Also, since init_xstate_ctx is not XSAVE specific anymore, rename it to init_fpstate, and mark it __read_mostly, because it's only modified once during bootup, and used as a reference fpstate later on. There's no change in functionality. We'd like to use xsave_state() earlier, but its SYSTEM_BOOTING check is too imprecise. The real condition that xsave_state() would like to check is whether alternative XSAVE instructions were patched into the kernel image already. Add such a (read-mostly) debug flag and use it in xsave_state(). 'xsave' is an x86 instruction name to most people - but xsave.h is about a lot more than just the XSAVE instruction: it includes definitions and support, both internal and external, related to xstate and xfeatures support. __save_fpu() has this pattern: if (unlikely(system_state == SYSTEM_BOOTING)) xsave_state_booting(&fpu->state.xsave); else xsave_state(&fpu->state.xsave); ... but it does not actually get called during system bootup. So remove the complication and always call xsave_state(). To make sure this assumption is correct, add a WARN_ONCE() debug check to xsave_state(). Make init_xstate_buf allocated statically at build time. This structure's maximum size is around 1KB - and it's allocated even on most modern embedded x86 CPUs which strive for FPU instruction set parity with desktop and server CPUs, so it's not like we can save much on smaller systems. This removes the last bootmem allocation from the FPU init path, allowing it to be called earlier in the boot sequence. There's only 8 xstate bits at the moment, and it's not like we can support unknown bits - so put xstate_offsets[] and xstate_sizes[] into static allocation. This is in preparation to be able to call the FPU init code earlier, when there's no bootmem available yet. Code like: fpu->state->xsave.xsave_hdr.xstate_bv |= XSTATE_FP; is an eyesore, because not only is the words 'xsave' and 'state' are repeated twice times (!), but also because of the 'hdr' and 'bv' abbreviations that are pretty meaningless at a first glance. Commit: f31a9f7c ("x86/xsaves: Use xsaves/xrstors to save and restore xsave area") introduced alternative instructions for XSAVES/XRSTORS and commit: adb9d526 ("x86/xsaves: Add xsaves and xrstors support for booting time") added support for the XSAVES/XRSTORS instructions at boot time. Unfortunately both failed to properly protect them against faulting: The 'xstate_fault' macro will use the closest label named '1' backward and that ends up in the .altinstr_replacement section rather than in .text. This means that the kernel will never find in the __ex_table the .text address where this instruction might fault, leading to serious problems if userspace manages to trigger the fault. In standard form, each state is saved in the xsave area in fixed offset. But in compacted form, offset of each saved state only can be calculated during run time because some xstates may not be enabled and saved. We define kernel API get_xsave_addr() returns address of a given state saved in a xsave area. It can be called in kernel to get address of each xstate in xsave area in either standard format or compacted format. It's useful when kernel wants to directly access each state in xsave area. Since boot_cpu_data and cpu capabilities are not enabled yet during early booting time, alternative can not be used in some functions to access xsave area. Therefore, we define two new functions xrstor_state_booting() and xsave_state_booting() to access xsave area just during early booting time. xrstor_state_booting restores xstate from xsave area during early booting time. xsave_state_booting saves xstate to xsave area during early booting time. The two functions are similar to xrstor_state and xsave_state respectively. But the two functions don't use alternatives because alternatives are not enabled when they are called in such early booting time. xrstor_state_booting is called only by functions defined as __init. So it's defined as __init and will be removed from memory after booting time. There is no extra memory cost caused by this function during running time. But because xsave_state_booting can be called by run-time function __save_fpu(), it's not defined as __init and will stay in memory during running time although it will not be called anymore during running time. It is not ideal to have this function stay in memory during running time. But it's a pretty small function and the memory cost will be small. By doing in this way, we can avoid to change a lot of code to just remove this small function and save a bit memory for running time. We use legacy xsave/xrstor to save and restore standard form of xsave area in user space context. No xsaveopt or xsaves is used here for two reasons. First, we don't want to use modified optimization which is implemented in xsaveopt and xsaves because xrstor/xrstors might track a wrong user space application. Secondly, we don't use compacted format of xsave area for backward compatibility because legacy user space applications only don't understand the compacted format of the xsave area. Using standard form of the xsave area may allocate more memory for user context than compacted form, but preserves compatibility with legacy applications. Furthermore, even with holes, the relevant cache lines don't get touched and thus the performance impact is limited. When Supervisor Mode Access Prevention (SMAP) is enabled, access to userspace from the kernel is controlled by the AC flag. To make the performance of manipulating that flag acceptable, there are two new instructions, STAC and CLAC, to set and clear it. This patch adds those instructions, via alternative(), when the SMAP feature is enabled. Fundamental model of the current Linux kernel is to lazily init and restore FPU instead of restoring the task state during context switch. This changes that fundamental lazy model to the non-lazy model for the processors supporting xsave feature. Reasons driving this model change are: i. Newer processors support optimized state save/restore using xsaveopt and xrstor by tracking the INIT state and MODIFIED state during context-switch. This is faster than modifying the cr0.TS bit which has serializing semantics. ii. Newer glibc versions use SSE for some of the optimized copy/clear routines. With certain workloads (like boot, kernel-compilation etc), application completes its work with in the first 5 task switches, thus taking upto 5 #DNA traps with the kernel not getting a chance to apply the above mentioned pre-load heuristic. iii. Some xstate features (like AMD's LWP feature) don't honor the cr0.TS bit and thus will not work correctly in the presence of lazy restore. Non-lazy state restore is needed for enabling such features. Some data on a two socket SNB system: * Saved 20K DNA exceptions during boot on a two socket SNB system. * Saved 50K DNA exceptions during kernel-compilation workload. * Improved throughput of the AVX based checksumming function inside the kernel by ~15% as xsave/xrstor is faster than the serializing clts/stts pair. Also now kernel_fpu_begin/end() relies on the patched alternative instructions. So move check_fpu() which uses the kernel_fpu_begin/end() after alternative_instructions(). Currently for x86 and x86_32 binaries, fpstate in the user sigframe is copied to/from the fpstate in the task struct. And in the case of signal delivery for x86_64 binaries, if the fpstate is live in the CPU registers, then the live state is copied directly to the user sigframe. Otherwise fpstate in the task struct is copied to the user sigframe. During restore, fpstate in the user sigframe is restored directly to the live CPU registers. Historically, different code paths led to different bugs. For example, x86_64 code path was not preemption safe till recently. Also there is lot of code duplication for support of new features like xsave etc. Unify signal handling code paths for x86 and x86_64 kernels. New strategy is as follows: Signal delivery: Both for 32/64-bit frames, align the core math frame area to 64bytes as needed by xsave (this where the main fpu/extended state gets copied to and excludes the legacy compatibility fsave header for the 32-bit [f]xsave frames). If the state is live, copy the register state directly to the user frame. If not live, copy the state in the thread struct to the user frame. And for 32-bit [f]xsave frames, construct the fsave header separately before the actual [f]xsave area. Signal return: As the 32-bit frames with [f]xstate has an additional 'fsave' header, copy everything back from the user sigframe to the fpstate in the task structure and reconstruct the fxstate from the 'fsave' header (Also user passed pointers may not be correctly aligned for any attempt to directly restore any partial state). At the next fpstate usage, everything will be restored to the live CPU registers. For all the 64-bit frames and the 32-bit fsave frame, restore the state from the user sigframe directly to the live CPU registers. 64-bit signals always restored the math frame directly, so we can expect the math frame pointer to be correctly aligned. For 32-bit fsave frames, there are no alignment requirements, so we can restore the state directly. "lat_sig catch" microbenchmark numbers (for x86, x86_64, x86_32 binaries) are with in the noise range with this change.
