This reverts commit 87499ffd. Where is that paper bag ... ah here. I've failed to take an odd interaction between my other cleanups and this reclaim_buffers patch into account and also failed to properly test it. Looks like there are more dragons and hidden trapdoors in the drm release path than actual lines of code. Until I get a clue, let's just revert this. This restricts the use of the big kernel lock to the i830 and i810 device drivers. The three remaining users in common code (open, ioctl and release) get converted to a new mutex, the drm_global_mutex, making the locking stricter than the big kernel lock. This may have a performance impact, but only in those cases that currently don't use DRM_UNLOCKED flag in the ioctl list and would benefit from that anyway. The reason why i810 and i830 cannot use drm_global_mutex in their mmap functions is a lock-order inversion problem between the current use of the BKL and mmap_sem in these drivers. Since the BKL has release-on-sleep semantics, it's harmless but it would cause trouble if we replace the BKL with a mutex. Instead, these drivers get their own ioctl wrappers that take the BKL around every ioctl call and then set their own handlers as DRM_UNLOCKED. Once upon a time, the DRM made the distinction between the drm_map data structure exchanged with user space and the drm_local_map used in the kernel. For some reasons, while the BSD port still has that "feature", the linux part abused drm_map for kernel internal usage as the local map only existed as a typedef of the struct drm_map. This patch fixes it by declaring struct drm_local_map separately (though its content is currently identical to the userspace variant), and changing the kernel code to only use that, except when it's a user<->kernel interface (ie. ioctl). This allows subsequent changes to the in-kernel format I've also replaced the use of drm_local_map_t with struct drm_local_map in a couple of places. Mostly by accident but they are the same (the former is a typedef of the later) and I have some remote plans and half finished patch to completely kill the drm_local_map_t typedef so I left those bits in. With the coming of kernel based modesetting and the memory manager stuff, the everything in one directory approach was getting very ugly and starting to be unmanageable. This restructures the drm along the lines of other kernel components. It creates a drivers/gpu/drm directory and moves the hw drivers into subdirectores. As a fallout, replace filp storage with file_priv storage for "unique identifier of a client" all over the DRM. There is a 1:1 mapping, so this should be a noop. This could be a minor performance improvement, as everyth on Linux dereferenced filp to get file_priv anyway, while only the mmap ioct went the other direction. Rename the driver hooks in the DRM to something a little more understandable: preinit -> load postinit -> (removed) presetup -> firstopen postsetup -> (removed) open_helper -> open prerelease -> preclose free_filp_priv -> postclose pretakedown -> lastclose postcleanup -> unload release -> reclaim_buffers_locked version -> (removed) postinit and version were replaced with generic code in the Linux DRM (drivers now set their version numbers and description in the driver structure, like on BSD). postsetup wasn't used at all. Fixes the savage hooks for initializing and tearing down mappings at the right times. Testing involved at least starting X, running glxgears, killing glxgears, exiting X, and repeating. Added device_is_agp callback to drm_driver. This function is called by the platform-specific drm_device_is_agp function. Added implementation of this function the the Linux-specific portion of the MGA driver to detect PCI G450 cards. Added code to the Linux-specific portion of the generic DRM layer to not initialize AGP infrastructure if the card is not AGP (this matches what already existed in BSD). Fix up i810/i830 and i915 drivers to always return AGP as they don't always report the capability. Fix the MGA to not report AGP for a card that has an AGP chip behind a PCI bridge. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
