There were a number of issues with the DSP context save/restore code, mostly left-over relics from when it was introduced on SH3-DSP with little follow-up testing, resulting in things like task_pt_dspregs() referencing incorrect state on the stack. This follows the MIPS convention of tracking the DSP state in the thread_struct and handling the state save/restore in switch_to() and finish_arch_switch() respectively. The regset interface is also updated, which allows us to finally be rid of task_pt_dspregs() and the special cased task_pt_regs(). unaligned and nonexistent address causes wrong exception handling in traps_32.c(handle_unaligned_access). 'handle_unalinged_ins' should return -EFAULT if address error is fixed up with kernel exception table, otherwise 'handle_unaligned_access' increases already fixed program counter and then crash. for example ioctl(fd, TCGETA, (struct termio *)-1) never return and stay in TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE state forever in my kernel. While looking at reducing the amount of architecture namespace pollution in the generic kernel, I found that asm/irq.h is included in the vast majority of compilations on ARM (around 650 files.) Since asm/irq.h includes a sub-architecture include file on ARM, this causes a negative impact on the ccache's ability to re-use the build results from other sub-architectures, so we have a desire to reduce the dependencies on asm/irq.h. It turns out that a major cause of this is the needless include of linux/hardirq.h into asm-generic/local.h. The patch below removes this include, resulting in some 250 to 300 files (around half) of the kernel then omitting asm/irq.h. My test builds still succeed, provided two ARM files are fixed (arch/arm/kernel/traps.c and arch/arm/mm/fault.c) - so there may be negative impacts for this on other architectures. Note that x86 does not include asm/irq.h nor linux/hardirq.h in its asm/local.h, so this patch can be viewed as bringing the generic version into line with the x86 version. Commit 3f5a54e3 ("ftrace: dump out ftrace buffers to console on panic") added an ftrace buffer dumper that hooks in to the die notifier chain and dumps out data in the oops path. The idea is that we want to get rid of the in/out/readb/writeb callbacks from the machvec and replace that with simple inline read and write operations to memory. Fast and simple for most hardware devices (think pci). Some devices require special treatment though - like 16-bit only CF devices - so we need to have some method to hook in callbacks. This patch makes it possible to add a per-device trap generating filter. This way we can get maximum performance of sane hardware - which doesn't need this filter - and crappy hardware works but gets punished by a performance hit. V2 changes things around a bit and replaces io access callbacks with a simple minimum_bus_width value. In the future we can add stride as well. One of the easiest things to isolate is the pid printed in kernel log. There was a patch, that made this for arch-independent code, this one makes so for arch/xxx files. It took some time to cross-compile it, but hopefully these are all the printks in arch code. There was a very preliminary bunch of SMP code scattered around for the SH7604 microcontrollers from way back when, and it has mostly suffered bitrot since then. With the tree already having been slowly getting prepped for SMP, this plugs in most of the remaining platform-independent bits. If the kernel OOPSed or BUGed then it probably should be considered as tainted. Thus, all subsequent OOPSes and SysRq dumps will report the tainted kernel. This saves a lot of time explaining oddities in the calltraces. The current generic bug implementation has a call to dump_stack() in case a WARN_ON(whatever) gets hit. Since report_bug(), which calls dump_stack(), gets called from an exception handler we can do better: just pass the pt_regs structure to report_bug() and pass it to show_regs() in case of a warning. This will give more debug informations like register contents, etc... In addition this avoids some pointless lines that dump_stack() emits, since it includes a stack backtrace of the exception handler which is of no interest in case of a warning. There are a few different cases for figuring out how to size the instruction. We read in the instruction located at regs->pc - 4 when rewinding the opcode to figure out if there's a 32-bit opcode before the faulting instruction, with a default of a - 2 adjustment on a mismatch. In practice this works for the cases where pc - 4 is just another 16-bit opcode, or we happen to have a 32-bit and a 16-bit immediately preceeding the pc value. In the cases where we aren't rewinding, this is much less ugly.. We also don't bother fixing up the places where we're explicitly dealing with 16-bit instructions, since this might lead to confusion regarding the encoding size possibilities on other CPU variants. Previously we haven't been doing anything with verbose BUG() reporting, and we've been relying on the oops path for handling BUG()'s, which is rather sub-optimal. This switches BUG handling to use a fixed trapa vector (#0x3e) where we construct a small bug frame post trapa instruction to get the context right.
