Avoid section mismatch involving arch_register_cpu. Marking arch_register_cpu as __init and removing the export for non-hotplug-cpu configurations makes the following warning go away: Section mismatch in reference from the function arch_register_cpu() to the function .devinit.text:register_cpu() The function arch_register_cpu() references the function __devinit register_cpu(). This is often because arch_register_cpu lacks a __devinit annotation or the annotation of register_cpu is wrong. The only external user of arch_register_cpu in the tree is in drivers/acpi/processor_core.c where it is guarded by ACPI_HOTPLUG_CPU (which depends on HOTPLUG_CPU). Fix following warning: WARNING: arch/x86/kernel/built-in.o(__ksymtab+0x2b0): Section mismatch: reference to .cpuinit.text:arch_register_cpu in '__ksymtab_arch_register_cpu' Annotating exported symbols are wrong. Previously the warning were hidden by avoiding the export in the non HOTPLUG_CPU case but the improved checks in modpost caught it anyway. Fix it by removing the __cpuinit annotation and rearrange the code a bit to save one ifdef/endif pair. Since the x86 merge, lots of files that referenced their own filenames are no longer correct. Rather than keep them up to date, just delete them, as they add no real value. Additionally: - fix up comment formatting in scx200_32.c - Remove a credit from myself in setup_64.c from a time when we had no SCM - remove longwinded history from tsc_32.c which can be figured out from git. With Goto-san's patch, we can add new pgdat/node at runtime. I'm now considering node-hot-add with cpu + memory on ACPI. I found acpi container, which describes node, could evaluate cpu before memory. This means cpu-hot-add occurs before memory hot add. In most part, cpu-hot-add doesn't depend on node hot add. But register_cpu(), which creates symbolic link from node to cpu, requires that node should be onlined before register_cpu(). When a node is onlined, its pgdat should be there. This patch-set holds off creating symbolic link from node to cpu until node is onlined. This removes node arguments from register_cpu(). Now, register_cpu() requires 'struct node' as its argument. But the array of struct node is now unified in driver/base/node.c now (By Goto's node hotplug patch). We can get struct node in generic way. So, this argument is not necessary now. This patch also guarantees add cpu under node only when node is onlined. It is necessary for node-hot-add vs. cpu-hot-add patch following this. Moreover, register_cpu calculates cpu->node_id by cpu_to_node() without regard to its 'struct node *root' argument. This patch removes it. Also modify callers of register_cpu()/unregister_cpu, whose args are changed by register-cpu-remove-node-struct patch. When new node becomes enable by hot-add, new sysfs file must be created for new node. So, if new node is enabled by add_memory(), register_one_node() is called to create it. In addition, I386's arch_register_node() and a part of register_nodes() of powerpc are consolidated to register_one_node() as a generic_code(). This is tested by Tiger4(IPF) with node hot-plug emulation. Don't create "online" control file for BSP (i386/x86_64) since its not removable. We originally added this to support ppc64 if the kernel has support but BIOS indicated no offline support, we just didnt create online files for them. We used the same method in ia64 as well, if we have a cpu taking platform interrupts but cannot be removed if those interrupts cannot be re-targeted to another cpu. When compiling a non-default subarch, topology.c is missing from the kernel build. This causes builds with CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU to fail. In addition, on Intel processors with cpuid level > 4, it causes intel_cacheinfo.c to reference uninitialized data that should have been set up by the initcall in topology.c which calls register_cpu. This causes a kernel panic on boot on newer Intel processors. Moving topology.c to arch/i386/kernel fixes both of these problems. Thanks to Dan Hecht for finding and fixing this problem. CONFIG_SCHED_SMT works as well. - idle threads are forked on demand from keventd threads for clean startup TBD: 1. Not tested on a real NUMA machine (tested with numa=fake=2) 2. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
