We mention that we are resetting the GPU, and dump the device state for post mortem debugging. However, while that dump contains the active processes and the one flagged as causing the error, we do not always include that information in dmesg. Include the name of the guilty process in dmesg for reference. Replace sampling the engine state every so often with a periodic heartbeat request to measure the health of an engine. This is coupled with the forced-preemption to allow long running requests to survive so long as they do not block other users. Medium term goal is to eliminate the i915->engine[] array and to get there we have recently introduced equivalent array in intel_gt. Now we need to migrate the code further towards this state. This next step is to eliminate usage of i915->engines[] from the for_each_engine_masked iterator. For this to work we also need to use engine->id as index when populating the gt->engine[] array and adjust the default engine set indexing to use engine->legacy_idx instead of assuming gt->engines[] indexing. v2: * Populate gt->engine[] earlier. * Check that we don't duplicate engine->legacy_idx v3: * Work around the initialization order issue between default_engines() and intel_engines_driver_register() which sets engine->legacy_idx for now. Now that i915_ggtt knows everything about its own paths to perform mmio, we can use that as our primary backpointer for individual fence registers. This reduces the amount of pointer dancing we have to perform on the common paths, but more importantly finishes our fence register encapsulation. Forgo the struct_mutex serialisation for i915_active, and interpose its own mutex handling for active/retire. This is a multi-layered sleight-of-hand. First, we had to ensure that no active/retire callbacks accidentally inverted the mutex ordering rules, nor assumed that they were themselves serialised by struct_mutex. More challenging though, is the rule over updating elements of the active rbtree. Instead of the whole i915_active now being serialised by struct_mutex, allocations/rotations of the tree are serialised by the i915_active.mutex and individual nodes are serialised by the caller using the i915_timeline.mutex (we need to use nested spinlocks to interact with the dma_fence callback lists). The pain point here is that instead of a single mutex around execbuf, we now have to take a mutex for active tracker (one for each vma, context, etc) and a couple of spinlocks for each fence update. The function intel_engine_breadcrumbs_irq() is always invoked from an interrupt handler and for that reason it invokes (as an optimisation) only spin_lock() for locking assuming that the interrupts are already disabled. The function intel_engine_signal_breadcrumbs() is provided to disable interrupts while the former function is invoked so that assumption is also true for callers from preemptible context. On PREEMPT_RT local_irq_disable() really disables interrupts and this forbids to invoke spin_lock() which becomes a sleeping spinlock. This is also problematic with `threadirqs' in conjunction with irq_work. With force threading the interrupt handler, the handler is invoked with disabled BH but with interrupts enabled. This is okay and the lock itself is never acquired in IRQ context. This changes with irq_work (signal_irq_work()) which _still_ invokes intel_engine_breadcrumbs_irq() from IRQ context. Lockdep should see this and complain. Acquire the locks in intel_engine_breadcrumbs_irq() with _irqsave() suffix and let all callers invoke intel_engine_breadcrumbs_irq() directly instead using intel_engine_signal_breadcrumbs(). Due to the nature of preempt-to-busy the execlists active tracking and the schedule queue may become temporarily desync'ed (between resubmission to HW and its ack from HW). This means that we may have unwound a request and passed it back to the virtual engine, but it is still inflight on the HW and may even result in a GPU hang. If we detect that GPU hang and try to reset, the hanging request->engine will no longer match the current engine, which means that the request is not on the execlists active list and we should not try to find an older incomplete request. Given that we have deduced this must be a request on a virtual engine, it is the single active request in the context and so must be guilty (as the context is still inflight, it is prevented from being executed on another engine as we process the reset). Our assumption that the we can ask the HW to lock the SFC even if not currently in use does not match the HW commitment. The expectation from the HW is that SW will not try to lock the SFC if the engine is not using it and if we do that the behavior is undefined; on ICL the HW ends up to returning the ack and ignoring our lock request, but this is not guaranteed and we shouldn't expect it going forward. Also, failing to get the ack while the SFC is in use means that we can't cleanly reset it, so fail the engine reset in that scenario. v2: drop rmw change, keep the log as debug and handle failure (Chris), improve comments (Tvrtko). If we issue a reset to a currently idle engine, leave it idle afterwards. This is useful to excise a linkage between reset and the shrinker. When waking the engine, we need to pin the default context image which we use for overwriting a guilty context -- if the engine is idle we do not need this pinned image! However, this pinning means that waking the engine acquires the FS_RECLAIM, and so may trigger the shrinker. The shrinker itself may need to wait upon the GPU to unbind and object and so may require services of reset; ergo we should avoid the engine wake up path. The danger in skipping the recovery for idle engines is that we leave the engine with no context defined, which may interfere with the operation of the power context on some older platforms. In practice, we should only be resetting an active GPU but it something to look out for on Ironlake (if memory serves). Push the engine stop into the back reset_prepare (where it already was!) This allows us to avoid dangerously setting the RING registers to 0 for logical contexts. If we clear the register on a live context, those invalid register values are recorded in the logical context state and replayed (with hilarious results). Being part of the GT HW, it make sense to keep the guc/huc structures inside the GT structure. To help with the encapsulation work done by the following patches, both structures are placed inside a new intel_uc container. Although this results in code with ugly nested dereferences (i915->gt.uc.guc...), it saves us the extra work required in moving the structures twice (i915 -> gt -> uc). Since the reset path wants to recover the engines itself, it only wants to reinitialise the hardware using i915_gem_init_hw(). Pull the call to intel_engines_resume() to the module init/resume path so we can avoid it during reset. If we issue a reset to a currently idle engine, leave it idle afterwards. This is useful to excise a linkage between reset and the shrinker. When waking the engine, we need to pin the default context image which we use for overwriting a guilty context -- if the engine is idle we do not need this pinned image! However, this pinning means that waking the engine acquires the FS_RECLAIM, and so may trigger the shrinker. The shrinker itself may need to wait upon the GPU to unbind and object and so may require services of reset; ergo we should avoid the engine wake up path. The danger in skipping the recovery for idle engines is that we leave the engine with no context defined, which may interfere with the operation of the power context on some older platforms. In practice, we should only be resetting an active GPU but it something to look out for on Ironlake (if memory serves). To continue the onslaught of removing the assumption of a global execution ordering, another casualty is the engine->timeline. Without an actual timeline to track, it is overkill and we can replace it with a much less grand plain list. We still need a list of requests inflight, for the simple purpose of finding inflight requests (for retiring, resetting, preemption etc).
