This reverts commit dc911f5b. Per the report, no matter what display mode you select with xrandr, the i915 driver will always select the alternate fixed mode. For the reporter this means that the display will always run at 40Hz which is quite annoying. This may be due to the mode comparison. But there are some other potential issues. The choice of alt_fixed_mode seems dubious. It's the first non-preferred mode, but there are no guarantees that the only difference would be refresh rate. Similarly, there may be more than one preferred mode in the probed modes list, and the commit changes the preferred mode selection to choose the last one on the list instead of the first. (Note that the probed modes list is the raw, unfiltered, unsorted list of modes from drm_add_edid_modes(), not the pretty result after a drm_helper_probe_single_connector_modes() call.) Finally, we already have eerily similar code in place to find the downclock mode for DRRS that seems like could be reused here. Back to the drawing board. We never support certain mode flags etc. Reject those early on in the mode_config.mode_valid() hook. That allows us to remove some duplicated checks from the connector .mode_valid() hooks, and it guarantees that we never see those flags even from user mode as the mode_config.mode_valid() hooks gets executed for those as well. Rather than having the caller of .get_config() set output_types based on encoder->type, let's just have .get_config() itself populate output_types. Reuse the normal state readout code to get the fixed mode for LVDS/DVO encoders. This removes some partially duplicated state readout code from LVDS/DVO encoders. The duplicated code wasn't actually even populating the negative h/vsync flags, leading to possible state checker complaints. The normal readout code populates that stuff fully. The enable/disable/etc. encoder hooks aren't supposed to alter the state(s), so pass them as const. Unfortunately C lacks any kind of deep const thingy, so this can't catch all abuses. Some fixed resolution panels actually support more than one mode, with the only thing different being the refresh rate. Having this alternate mode available to us is desirable, because it allows us to test PSR on panels whose setup time at the preferred mode is too long. It's dead code, the core handles all this directly now. The only special case is nouveau and tda988x which used one function for both legacy modeset code and -nv50 atomic world instead of 2 vtables. The only special case is nouveau which used one function for both pre-nv50 legacy modeset code and post-nv50 atomic world instead of 2 vtables. But amounts to exactly the same. What is rather strange here is how few drivers set this up, I suspect the earlier patch to handle properties in the core did end up fixing a pile of possible issues. Pass dev_priv to intel_setup_outputs() and functions called by it, since those are all intel i915 specific functions. Also, in the majority of the functions dev_priv is used more often than dev. Changing the return type from 'char' to 'enum port' in intel_dvo_port_name() makes it easier to later move the port information to intel_encoder. If we hit the error path, we have never called drm_encoder_init() and so have nothing to cleanup. This is mostly code churn, with exception of a few places: - intel_display.c has changes in intel_sanitize_encoder - intel_ddi.c has intel_ddi_fdi_disable calling intel_ddi_post_disable, and required a function change. Also affects intel_display.c - intel_dp_mst.c passes a NULL crtc_state and conn_state to intel_ddi_post_disable for shutting down the real encoder. If we would pass conn_state, then conn_state->connector != intel_dig_port->connector and conn_state->best_encoder != to_intel_encoder(intel_dig_port). We also shouldn't pass crtc_state, because in that case the disabling sequence may potentially be different depending on which crtc is disabled last. Nice way to introduce bugs. No other functional changes are done, diff stat is already huge. Each encoder type will need to be fixed to use the atomic states separately. Currently the backlight is being registered in the load phase (before the display and its objects are registered). Move the backlight registration into the analogous phase by performing it from the connector registration, just after its creation. For all outputs except dp_mst, we have a 1:1 relationship between connectors and encoders and the driver is relying on the atomic helpers: we can drop the custom ->best_encoder() implementation and let the core call drm_atomic_helper_best_encoder() for us. Make I915_READ and I915_WRITE more type safe by wrapping the register offset in a struct. This should eliminate most of the fumbles we've had with misplaced parens. This only takes care of normal mmio registers. We could extend the idea to other register types and define each with its own struct. That way you wouldn't be able to accidentally pass the wrong thing to a specific register access function. The gpio_reg setup is probably the ugliest thing left. But I figure I'd just leave it for now, and wait for some divine inspiration to strike before making it nice. As for the generated code, it's actually a bit better sometimes. Store the DVO SRCDIM register offset alongside the DVO control register offset in intel_dvo_device. This gets rid of the switch statement whose case values are the DVO control register offsets. Such a construct would cause problems for register type safety. The adjustead_mode crtc_ timings are what we will program into the hardware, so it's those timings we should be looking practically everywhere. The normal and crtc_ timings should differ only when stere doubling is used. In that case the normal timings are the orignal non-doubled timigns, and crtc_ timings are the doubled timings used by the hardware. The only case where we continue to look at the normal timings is when we pass the adjusted_mode to drm_match_{cea,hdmi}_mode() to find the VIC. drm_edid keeps the modes aronund in the non-double form only, so it needs the non-double timings to match against. Replace intel_dvo->panel_fixed_mode with the appropriate intel_panel stuff. Now all connectors that have a fixed mode use intel_panel. It is possible the we request to have a mode that has higher pixel clock than our HW can support. This patch checks if requested pixel clock is lower than the one supported by the HW. The requested mode is discarded if we cannot support the requested pixel clock. This patch applies to DVO. First step in removing dpms and validating atomic state. There can still be a mismatch in the connector state because the dpms callbacks are still used, but this can not happen immediately after a modeset. This is required to properly handle failing dpms calls. When making a wait in i915 interruptible, I've noticed that the dpms sequence could fail with -ERESTARTSYS because it was waiting interruptibly for flips. So from now on allow drivers to fail in their connector dpms callback. Encoder and crtc dpms callbacks are unaffected. Changes since v1: - Update kerneldoc for the drm helper functions. Connector states were being allocated in intel_setup_outputs() in loop over all connectors. That meant hot-added connectors would have a NULL state. Since the change to use a struct drm_atomic_state for the legacy modeset, connector states are necessary for the i915 driver to function properly, so that would lead to oopses.
