This patchset ("stable page writes, part 2") makes some key modifications to the original 'stable page writes' patchset. First, it provides creators (devices and filesystems) of a backing_dev_info a flag that declares whether or not it is necessary to ensure that page contents cannot change during writeout. It is no longer assumed that this is true of all devices (which was never true anyway). Second, the flag is used to relaxed the wait_on_page_writeback calls so that wait only occurs if the device needs it. Third, it fixes up the remaining disk-backed filesystems to use this improved conditional-wait logic to provide stable page writes on those filesystems. It is hoped that (for people not using checksumming devices, anyway) this patchset will give back unnecessary performance decreases since the original stable page write patchset went into 3.0. Sorry about not fixing it sooner. Complaints were registered by several people about the long write latencies introduced by the original stable page write patchset. Generally speaking, the kernel ought to allocate as little extra memory as possible to facilitate writeout, but for people who simply cannot wait, a second page stability strategy is (re)introduced: snapshotting page contents. The waiting behavior is still the default strategy; to enable page snapshotting, a superblock flag (MS_SNAP_STABLE) must be set. This flag is used to bandaid^Henable stable page writeback on ext3[1], and is not used anywhere else. Given that there are already a few storage devices and network FSes that have rolled their own page stability wait/page snapshot code, it would be nice to move towards consolidating all of these. It seems possible that iscsi and raid5 may wish to use the new stable page write support to enable zero-copy writeout. Thank you to Jan Kara for helping fix a couple more filesystems. The network filesystems were left to do their own thing, so they'd wait too. After this patchset, all the disk filesystems except ext3 and btrfs will wait only if the hardware requires it. ext3 (if necessary) snapshots pages instead of blocking, and btrfs provides its own bdi so the mm will never wait. Network filesystems haven't been touched, so either they provide their own wait code, or they don't block at all. The blocking behavior is back to what it was before 3.0 if you don't have a disk requiring stable page writes. This patchset has been tested on 3.8.0-rc3 on x64 with ext3, ext4, and xfs. I've spot-checked 3.8.0-rc4 and seem to be getting the same results as -rc3. [1] The alternative fixes to ext3 include fixing the locking order and page bit handling like we did for ext4 (but then why not just use ext4?), or setting PG_writeback so early that ext3 becomes extremely slow. I tried that, but the number of write()s I could initiate dropped by nearly an order of magnitude. That was a bit much even for the author of the stable page series! :) This patch: Creates a per-backing-device flag that tracks whether or not pages must be held immutable during writeout. The ThingM blink(1) is an open source hardware USB RGB LED. It contains an internal EEPROM, allowing to configure up to 12 light patterns. A light pattern is a RGB color plus a fade time. This driver registers a LED class instance with additional sysfs attributes to support basic functions such as setting RGB colors, fade and playing. Other functions are still accessible through the hidraw interface. At this time, the only documentation for the device is the firmware source code from ThingM, plus a few schematics. Using /dev/pstore as a mount point for the pstore filesystem is slightly awkward. We don't normally mount filesystems in /dev/ and the /dev/pstore file isn't created automatically by anything. While this method will still work, we can create a persistent mount point in sysfs. This will put pstore on par with things like cgroups and efivarfs. The IMA policy permits specifying rules to enable or disable measurement/appraisal/audit based on the file system magic number. If, for example, the policy contains an ext4 measurement rule, the rule is enabled for all ext4 partitions. Sometimes it might be necessary to enable measurement/appraisal/audit only for one partition and disable it for another partition of the same type. With the existing IMA policy syntax, this can not be done. This patch provides support for IMA policy rules to specify the file system by its UUID (eg. fsuuid=397449cd-687d-4145-8698-7fed4a3e0363). For partitions not being appraised, it might be a good idea to mount file systems with the 'noexec' option to prevent executing non-verified binaries. This patch to the SRW-S1 driver adds the ability to control all LEDs simultaneously as testing showed that it was slow (noticably!!) when seting or clearing all the LEDs in turn. It adds a 'RPMALL' LED, whose behavoir is asserted to all the LEDs in the bar graph, individual LEDs can subsequently be turned on/off individually. Since ACPI power resources are going to be used more extensively on new hardware platforms, it is necessary to allow user space (powertop in particular) to look at the lists of power resources corresponding to different power states of devices for diagnostics and control purposes. For this reason, for each power state of an ACPI device node using power resources create a special attribute group under the device node's directory in sysfs containing links to sysfs directories representing the power resources in that list. The Technologic Systems TS-5500 is an x86-based (AMD Elan SC520) single board computer. This driver registers most of its devices and exposes sysfs attributes for information such as jumpers' state or presence of some of its options. This driver currently registers the TS-5500 platform, its on-board LED, 2 pin blocks (GPIO) and its analog/digital converter. It can be extended to support other Technologic Systems products, such as the TS-5600. This patch does a few things. 1) Makes /sys/bus/fcoe/ctlr_{create,destroy} interfaces. These interfaces take an <ifname> and will either create an FCoE Controller or destroy an FCoE Controller depending on which file is written to. The new FCoE Controller will start in a DISABLED state and will not do discovery or login until it is ENABLED. This pause will allow us to configure the FCoE Controller before enabling it. 2) Makes the 'mode' attribute of a fcoe_ctlr_device writale. This allows the user to configure the mode in which the FCoE Controller will start in when it is ENABLED. Possible modes are 'Fabric', or 'VN2VN'. The default mode for a fcoe_ctlr{,_device} is 'Fabric'. Drivers must implement the set_fcoe_ctlr_mode routine to support this feature. libfcoe offers an exported routine to set a FCoE Controller's mode. The mode can only be changed when the FCoE Controller is DISABLED. This patch also removes the get_fcoe_ctlr_mode pointer in the fcoe_sysfs function template, the code in fcoe_ctlr.c to get the mode and the assignment of the fcoe_sysfs function pointer to the fcoe_ctlr.c implementation (in fcoe and bnx2fc). fcoe_sysfs can return that value for the mode without consulting the LLD. 3) Make a 'enabled' attribute of a fcoe_ctlr_device. On a read, fcoe_sysfs will return the attribute's value. On a write, fcoe_sysfs will call the LLD (if there is a callback) to notifiy that the enalbed state has changed. This patch maintains the old FCoE control interfaces as module parameters, but it adds comments pointing out that the old interfaces are deprecated. With the addition of the new kernel module syscall, which defines two arguments - a file descriptor to the kernel module and a pointer to a NULL terminated string of module arguments - it is now possible to measure and appraise kernel modules like any other file on the file system. This patch adds support to measure and appraise kernel modules in an extensible and consistent manner. To support filesystems without extended attribute support, additional patches could pass the signature as the first parameter. devfreq governors such as ondemand are controlled by a min and max frequency, while governors like userspace governor allow us to set a specific frequency. However, for the same specific device, depending on the SoC, the available frequencies can vary. So expose the available frequencies as a snapshot over sysfs to allow informed decisions. This was inspired by cpufreq framework's equivalent for similar usage sysfs node: scaling_available_frequencies. _SUN method provides the slot unique-ID in the ACPI namespace. And The value is written in Advanced Configuration and Power Interface Specification as follows: "The _SUN value is required to be unique among the slots ofthe same type. It is also recommended that this number match the slot number printed on the physical slot whenever possible." So if we can know the value, we can identify the physical position of the slot in the system. The patch creates "sun" file in sysfs for identifying physical position of the slot.
