Move the IO flag definitions to xfs_inode.h and kill the header file as it is now empty. Removing the xfs_vnode.h file showed up an implicit header include path: xfs_linux.h -> xfs_vnode.h -> xfs_fs.h And so every xfs header file has been inplicitly been including xfs_fs.h where it is needed or not. Hence the removal of xfs_vnode.h causes all sorts of build issues because BBTOB() and friends are no longer automatically included in the build. This also gets fixed. Trying to support tiny disks only and saving a bit memory might have made sense on an SGI O2 15 years ago, but is pretty pointless today. Remove the rarely tested codepath that uses various smaller in-memory types to reduce our test matrix and make the codebase a little bit smaller and less complicated. Embed a base kobject into xfs_mount. This creates a kobject associated with each XFS mount and a subdirectory in sysfs with the name of the filesystem. The subdirectory lifecycle matches that of the mount. Also add the new xfs_sysfs.[c,h] source files with some XFS sysfs infrastructure to facilitate attribute creation. Note that there are currently no attributes exported as part of the xfs_mount kobject. It exists solely to serve as a per-mount container for child objects. We want to distinguish between corruption, CRC errors, etc. In addition, the full stack trace on verifier errors seems less than helpful; it looks more like an oops than corruption. Create a new function to specifically alert the user to verifier errors, which can differentiate between EFSCORRUPTED and CRC mismatches. It doesn't dump stack unless the xfs error level is turned up high. Define a new error message (EFSBADCRC) to clearly identify CRC errors. Running a CONFIG_XFS_DEBUG kernel in production environments is not the best idea as it introduces significant overhead, can change the behaviour of algorithms (such as allocation) to improve test coverage, and (most importantly) panic the machine on non-fatal errors. There are many cases where all we want to do is run a kernel with more bounds checking enabled, such as is provided by the ASSERT() statements throughout the code, but without all the potential overhead and drawbacks. This patch converts all the ASSERT statements to evaluate as WARN_ON(1) statements and hence if they fail dump a warning and a stack trace to the log. This has minimal overhead and does not change any algorithms, and will allow us to find strange "out of bounds" problems more easily on production machines. There are a few places where assert statements contain debug only code. These are converted to be debug-or-warn only code so that we still get all the assert checks in the code. Create a new mount workqueue and delayed_work to enable background scanning and freeing of eofblocks inodes. The scanner kicks in once speculative preallocation occurs and stops requeueing itself when no eofblocks inodes exist. The scan interval is based on the new 'speculative_prealloc_lifetime' tunable (default to 5m). The background scanner performs unfiltered, best effort scans (which skips inodes under lock contention or with a dirty cache mapping). Currently we have a few issues with the way the workqueue code is used to implement AIL pushing: - it accidentally uses the same workqueue as the syncer action, and thus can be prevented from running if there are enough sync actions active in the system. - it doesn't use the HIGHPRI flag to queue at the head of the queue of work items At this point I'm not confident enough in getting all the workqueue flags and tweaks right to provide a perfectly reliable execution context for AIL pushing, which is the most important piece in XFS to make forward progress when the log fills. Revert back to use a kthread per filesystem which fixes all the above issues at the cost of having a task struct and stack around for each mounted filesystem. In addition this also gives us much better ways to diagnose any issues involving hung AIL pushing and removes a small amount of code. Use the move from Linux 2.6 to Linux 3.x as an excuse to kill the annoying subdirectories in the XFS source code. Besides the large amount of file rename the only changes are to the Makefile, a few files including headers with the subdirectory prefix, and the binary sysctl compat code that includes a header under fs/xfs/ from kernel/. The remaining functionality in debug.[ch] is effectively just assert handling, conditional debug definitions and hex dumping. The hex dumping and assert function can be moved into the new printk module, while the rest can be moved into top-level header files. This allows fs/xfs/support/debug.[ch] to be completely removed from the codebase. Most of the logging infrastructure in XFS is unneccessary and designed around the infrastructure supplied by Irix rather than Linux. To rationalise the logging interfaces, start by introducing simple printk wrappers similar to the dev_printk() infrastructure. Later patches will convert code to use this new interface. The log grant queues are one of the few places left using sv_t constructs for waiting. Given we are touching this code, we should convert them to plain wait queues. While there, convert all the other sv_t users in the log code as well. Seeing as this removes the last users of the sv_t type, remove the header file defining the wrapper and the fragments that still reference it. This patch adds support for 32bit project quota identifiers. On disk format is backward compatible with 16bit projid numbers. projid on disk is now kept in two 16bit values - di_projid_lo (which holds the same position as old 16bit projid value) and new di_projid_hi (takes existing padding) and converts from/to 32bit value on the fly. xfs_admin (for existing fs), mkfs.xfs (for new fs) needs to be used to enable PROJID32BIT support. Convert XFS to the new truncate sequence. We still can have errors after updating the file size in xfs_setattr, but these are real I/O errors and lead to a transaction abort and filesystem shutdown, so they are not an issue. Errors from ->write_begin and write_end can now be handled correctly because we can actually get rid of the delalloc extents while previous the buffer state was stipped in block_invalidatepage. There is still no error handling for ->direct_IO, because doing so will need some major restructuring given that we only have the iolock shared and do not hold i_mutex at all. Fortunately leaving the normally allocated blocks behind there is not a major issue and this will get cleaned up by xfs_free_eofblock later. Note: the patch is against Al's vfs.git tree as that contains the nessecary preparations. I'd prefer to get it applied there so that we can get some testing in linux-next. Dmapi support was never merged upstream, but we still have a lot of hooks bloating XFS for it, all over the fast pathes of the filesystem. This patch drops over 700 lines of dmapi overhead. If we'll ever get HSM support in mainline at least the namespace events can be done much saner in the VFS instead of the individual filesystem, so it's not like this is much help for future work. Convert the old xfs tracing support that could only be used with the out of tree kdb and xfsidbg patches to use the generic event tracer. To use it make sure CONFIG_EVENT_TRACING is enabled and then enable all xfs trace channels by: echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/enable or alternatively enable single events by just doing the same in one event subdirectory, e.g. echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/xfs_ihold/enable or set more complex filters, etc. In Documentation/trace/events.txt all this is desctribed in more detail. To reads the events do a cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace Compared to the last posting this patch converts the tracing mostly to the one tracepoint per callsite model that other users of the new tracing facility also employ. This allows a very fine-grained control of the tracing, a cleaner output of the traces and also enables the perf tool to use each tracepoint as a virtual performance counter, allowing us to e.g. count how often certain workloads git various spots in XFS. Take a look at http://lwn.net/Articles/346470/ for some examples. Also the btree tracing isn't included at all yet, as it will require additional core tracing features not in mainline yet, I plan to deliver it later. Now that we've stopped using the Linux inode cache when can trivally support the inode64 mount option on 32bit architectures. As far as the kernel and most userspace is concerned this works perfectly, but applications still using really old stat and readdir interfaces will get an EOVERFLOW error when hitting an inode number not fitting into 32 bits (that problem of course also exists when using these applications on a 64bit kernel). Note that because inode64 is simply a mount option we can currently mount a filesystem having > 32 bit inode numbers and cause a variety of problems, all this is solved but this patch which enables XFS_BIG_INUMS, even when inode64 is not used. If we get a race looking up a reclaimable inode, we can end up with the winner proceeding to use the inode before it has been completely re-initialised. This is a Bad Thing. Fix the race by checking whether we are still initialising the inod eonce we have a reference to it, and if so wait for the initialisation to complete before continuing. While there, fix a leaked reference count in the same code when encountering an unlinked inode and we are not doing a lookup for a create operation.
