There's no reason for preventing the creation and removal of qmimux network interfaces when the underlying interface is up. This makes qmi_wwan mux implementation more similar to the rmnet one, simplifying userspace management of the same logical interfaces. Pass through mode is to allow packets in MAP format to be passed on to the stack. rmnet driver can be used to process and demultiplex these packets. Pass through mode can be enabled when the device is in raw ip mode only. Conversely, raw ip mode cannot be disabled when pass through mode is enabled. Userspace can use pass through mode in conjunction with rmnet driver through the following steps- 1. Enable raw ip mode on qmi_wwan device 2. Enable pass through mode on qmi_wwan device 3. Create a rmnet device with qmi_wwan device as real device using netlink Signed-off-by: NSubash Abhinov Kasiviswanathan <subashab@codeaurora.org> Acked-by: NBjørn Mork <bjorn@mork.no> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/1611560015-20034-1-git-send-email-subashab@codeaurora.orgSigned-off-by: NJakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>

When measuring the throughput (iperf3 + TCP) while routing on a not-so-powerful device (Mediatek MT7621, 880MHz CPU), I noticed that I achieved significantly lower speeds with QMI-based modems than for example a USB LAN dongle. The CPU was saturated in all of my tests. With the dongle I got ~300 Mbit/s, while I only measured ~200 Mbit/s with the modems. All offloads, etc. were switched off for the dongle, and I configured the modems to use QMAP (16k aggregation). The tests with the dongle were performed in my local (gigabit) network, while the LTE network the modems were connected to delivers 700-800 Mbit/s. Profiling the kernel revealed the cause of the performance difference. In qmimux_rx_fixup(), an SKB is allocated for each packet contained in the URB. This SKB has too little headroom, causing the check in skb_cow() (called from ip_forward()) to fail. pskb_expand_head() is then called and the SKB is reallocated. In the output from perf, I see that a significant amount of time is spent in pskb_expand_head() + support functions. In order to ensure that the SKB has enough headroom, this commit increases the amount of memory allocated in qmimux_rx_fixup() by LL_MAX_HEADER. The reason for using LL_MAX_HEADER and not a more accurate value, is that we do not know the type of the outgoing network interface. After making this change, I achieve the same throughput with the modems as with the dongle. usbnet creates network interfaces with min_mtu = 0 and max_mtu = ETH_MAX_MTU. These values are not modified by qmi_wwan when the network interface is created initially, allowing, for example, to set mtu greater than 1500. When a raw_ip switch is done (raw_ip set to 'Y', then set to 'N') the mtu values for the network interface are set through ether_setup, with min_mtu = ETH_MIN_MTU and max_mtu = ETH_DATA_LEN, not allowing anymore to set mtu greater than 1500 (error: mtu greater than device maximum). The patch restores the original min/max mtu values set by usbnet after a raw_ip switch. We have been using the fact that the QMI and DIAG functions usually are the only ones with class/subclass/protocol being ff/ff/ff on Quectel modems. This has allowed us to match the QMI function without knowing the exact interface number, which can vary depending on firmware configuration. The ability to silently reject the DIAG function, which is usually handled by the option driver, is important for this method to work. This is done based on the knowledge that it has exactly 2 bulk endpoints. QMI function control interfaces will have either 3 or 1 endpoint. This rule is universal so the quirk condition can be removed. The fixed layouts known from the Gobi1k and Gobi2k modems have been gradually replaced by more dynamic layouts, and many vendors now use configurable layouts without changing device IDs. Renaming the class/subclass/protocol matching macro makes it more obvious that this is now not Quectel specific anymore. Commit f25e1392 removed the support for the pre-production variant of the Dell DW5821e to avoid probing another USB interface unnecessarily. However, the pre-production samples are found in the wild, and this lack of support is causing problems for users of such samples. It is therefore necessary to support both variants. Matching on both interfaces 0 and 1 is not expected to cause any problem with either variant, as only the QMI function will be probed successfully on either. Interface 1 will be rejected based on the HID class for the production variant: T: Bus=01 Lev=03 Prnt=04 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 16 Spd=480 MxCh= 0 D: Ver= 2.10 Cls=ef(misc ) Sub=02 Prot=01 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 2 P: Vendor=413c ProdID=81d7 Rev=03.18 S: Manufacturer=DELL S: Product=DW5821e Snapdragon X20 LTE S: SerialNumber=0123456789ABCDEF C: #Ifs= 6 Cfg#= 1 Atr=a0 MxPwr=500mA I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=ff(vend.) Most, if not all, Quectel devices use dynamic interface numbers, and users are able to change the USB configuration at will. Matching on for example interface number is therefore not possible. Instead, the QMI device can be identified by looking at the interface class, subclass and protocol (all 0xff), as well as the number of endpoints. The reason we need to look at the number of endpoints, is that the diagnostic port interface has the same class, subclass and protocol as QMI. However, the diagnostic port only has two endpoints, while QMI has three. Until now, we have identified the QMI device by combining a match on class, subclass and protocol, with a call to the function quectel_diag_detect(). In quectel_diag_detect(), we check if the number of endpoints matches for known Quectel vendor/product ids. Adding new vendor/product ids to quectel_diag_detect() is not a good long-term solution. This commit replaces the function with a quirk, and applies the quirk to affected Quectel devices that I have been able to test the change with (EP06, EM12 and EC25). If the quirk is set and the number of endpoints equal two, we return from qmi_wwan_probe() with -ENODEV. Quectel EG12 (module)/EM12 (M.2 card) is a Cat. 12 LTE modem. The modem behaves in the same way as the EP06, so the "set DTR"-quirk must be applied and the diagnostic-interface check performed. Since the diagnostic-check now applies to more modems, I have renamed the function from quectel_ep06_diag_detected() to quectel_diag_detected().
