A follow-up patch will add a notifier type NETDEV_PRE_CHANGEADDR, which allows vetoing of MAC address changes. One prominent path to that notification is through dev_set_mac_address(). Therefore give this function an extack argument, so that it can be packed together with the notification. Thus a textual reason for rejection (or a warning) can be communicated back to the user. In order to pass extack together with NETDEV_PRE_UP notifications, it's necessary to route the extack to __dev_open() from diverse (possibly indirect) callers. One prominent API through which the notification is invoked is dev_open(). Therefore extend dev_open() with and extra extack argument and update all users. Most of the calls end up just encoding NULL, but bond and team drivers have the extack readily available. team_notify_peers() will send ARP and NA to notify peers. team_mcast_rejoin() will send multicast join group message to notify peers. We should do this when enabling/changed to a new port. But it doesn't make sense to do it when a port is disabled. On the other hand, when we set mcast_rejoin_count to 2, and do a failover, team_port_disable() will increase mcast_rejoin.count_pending to 2 and then team_port_enable() will increase mcast_rejoin.count_pending to 4. We will send 4 mcast rejoin messages at latest, which will make user confused. The same with notify_peers.count. Fix it by deleting team_notify_peers() and team_mcast_rejoin() in team_port_disable(). This fixes a problem introduced by: commit 2cde6acd ("netpoll: Fix __netpoll_rcu_free so that it can hold the rtnl lock") When using netconsole on a bond, __netpoll_cleanup can asynchronously recurse multiple times, each __netpoll_free_async call can result in more __netpoll_free_async's. This means there is now a race between cleanup_work queues on multiple netpoll_info's on multiple devices and the configuration of a new netpoll. For example if a netconsole is set to enable 0, reconfigured, and enable 1 immediately, this netconsole will likely not work. Given the reason for __netpoll_free_async is it can be called when rtnl is not locked, if it is locked, we should be able to execute synchronously. It appears to be locked everywhere it's called from. Generalize the design pattern from the teaming driver for current callers of __netpoll_free_async. team's ndo_add_slave() acquires 'team->lock' and later tries to open the newly enslaved device via dev_open(). This emits a 'NETDEV_UP' event that causes the VLAN driver to add VLAN 0 on the team device. team's ndo_vlan_rx_add_vid() will also try to acquire 'team->lock' and deadlock. Fix this by checking early at the enslavement function that a team device is not being enslaved to itself. A similar check was added to the bond driver in commit 09a89c21 ("bonding: disallow enslaving a bond to itself"). A follow-up patch adds a new entry point, team_port_dev_txable(). Making it an ordinary exported function would mean that any module that may need the service in one of the supported configurations also unconditionally needs to pull in the team module, whether or not the user actually intends to create team interfaces. To prevent that, team_port_dev_txable() is defined in if_team.h, and therefore all dependencies of that function also need to be publicly-visible. Therefore move team_port_get_rcu() from team.c to if_team.h. This patch makes it so that instead of passing a void pointer as the accel_priv we instead pass a net_device pointer as sb_dev. Making this change allows us to pass the subordinate device through to the fallback function eventually so that we can keep the actual code in the ndo_select_queue call as focused on possible on the exception cases. Until the udp receive stack supports large packets (UDP GRO), GSO packets must not loop from the egress to the ingress path. Revert the change that added NETIF_F_GSO_UDP_L4 to various virtual devices through NETIF_F_GSO_ENCAP_ALL as this included devices that may loop packets, such as veth and macvlan. The case for upper device is already taken care of in both of the following cases: 1. FDB add/del - driver should check at the notification cb if the stacked device contains his ports. 2. Network devices can allocate reasources and private memory using netdev_ops->ndo_init(). However, the release of these resources can occur in one of two different places. Either netdev_ops->ndo_uninit() or netdev->destructor(). The decision of which operation frees the resources depends upon whether it is necessary for all netdev refs to be released before it is safe to perform the freeing. netdev_ops->ndo_uninit() presumably can occur right after the NETDEV_UNREGISTER notifier completes and the unicast and multicast address lists are flushed. netdev->destructor(), on the other hand, does not run until the netdev references all go away. Further complicating the situation is that netdev->destructor() almost universally does also a free_netdev(). This creates a problem for the logic in register_netdevice(). Because all callers of register_netdevice() manage the freeing of the netdev, and invoke free_netdev(dev) if register_netdevice() fails. If netdev_ops->ndo_init() succeeds, but something else fails inside of register_netdevice(), it does call ndo_ops->ndo_uninit(). But it is not able to invoke netdev->destructor(). This is because netdev->destructor() will do a free_netdev() and then the caller of register_netdevice() will do the same. However, this means that the resources that would normally be released by netdev->destructor() will not be. Over the years drivers have added local hacks to deal with this, by invoking their destructor parts by hand when register_netdevice() fails. Many drivers do not try to deal with this, and instead we have leaks. Let's close this hole by formalizing the distinction between what private things need to be freed up by netdev->destructor() and whether the driver needs unregister_netdevice() to perform the free_netdev(). netdev->priv_destructor() performs all actions to free up the private resources that used to be freed by netdev->destructor(), except for free_netdev(). netdev->needs_free_netdev is a boolean that indicates whether free_netdev() should be done at the end of unregister_netdevice(). Now, register_netdevice() can sanely release all resources after ndo_ops->ndo_init() succeeds, by invoking both ndo_ops->ndo_uninit() and netdev->priv_destructor(). And at the end of unregister_netdevice(), we invoke netdev->priv_destructor() and optionally call free_netdev(). Signed-off-by: NDavid S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

Commit f6988cb6 ("team: don't call netdev_change_features under team->lock") fixed the issue calling netdev_change_features under team->lock for team_compute_features. But there are still two places where it calls netdev_change_features under team->lock, team_port_add and team_port_del. It may cause a dead lock when the slave port with LRO enabled is added. This restores the ability to set a team device's mtu to anything higher than 1500. Similar to the reported issue with bonding, the team driver calls ether_setup(), which sets an initial max_mtu of 1500, while the underlying hardware can handle something much larger. Just set it to ETH_MAX_MTU to support all possible values, and the limitations of the underlying devices will prevent setting anything too large. Now genl_register_family() is the only thing (other than the users themselves, perhaps, but I didn't find any doing that) writing to the family struct. In all families that I found, genl_register_family() is only called from __init functions (some indirectly, in which case I've add __init annotations to clarifly things), so all can actually be marked __ro_after_init. Static family IDs have never really been used, the only use case was the workaround I introduced for those users that assumed their family ID was also their multicast group ID. Additionally, because static family IDs would never be reserved by the generic netlink code, using a relatively low ID would only work for built-in families that can be registered immediately after generic netlink is started, which is basically only the control family (apart from the workaround code, which I also had to add code for so it would reserve those IDs) Thus, anything other than GENL_ID_GENERATE is flawed and luckily not used except in the cases I mentioned. Move those workarounds into a few lines of code, and then get rid of GENL_ID_GENERATE entirely, making it more robust. Signed-off-by: NJohannes Berg <johannes.berg@intel.com> Signed-off-by: NDavid S.
