Add CONFIG_ASM_MODVERSIONS. This allows to remove one if-conditional nesting in scripts/Makefile.build. scripts/Makefile.build is run every time Kbuild descends into a sub-directory. So, I want to avoid $(wildcard ...) evaluation where possible although computing $(wildcard ...) is so cheap that it may not make measurable performance difference. If a device doesn't support DMA to a physical address that includes the encryption bit (currently bit 47, so 48-bit DMA), then the DMA must occur to unencrypted memory. SWIOTLB is used to satisfy that requirement if an IOMMU is not active (enabled or configured in passthrough mode). However, commit fafadcd1 ("swiotlb: don't dip into swiotlb pool for coherent allocations") modified the coherent allocation support in SWIOTLB to use the DMA direct coherent allocation support. When an IOMMU is not active, this resulted in dma_alloc_coherent() failing for devices that didn't support DMA addresses that included the encryption bit. Addressing this requires changes to the force_dma_unencrypted() function in kernel/dma/direct.c. Since the function is now non-trivial and SME/SEV specific, update the DMA direct support to add an arch override for the force_dma_unencrypted() function. The arch override is selected when CONFIG_AMD_MEM_ENCRYPT is set. The arch override function resides in the arch/x86/mm/mem_encrypt.c file and forces unencrypted DMA when either SEV is active or SME is active and the device does not support DMA to physical addresses that include the encryption bit. The only reason s390 has ARCH_SELECT_MEMORY_MODEL option in arch/s390/Kconfig is an ancient compile error with allnoconfig which was fixed by commit 97195d6b ("[S390] fix sparsemem related compile error with allnoconfig on s390") by adding the ARCH_SELECT_MEMORY_MODEL option. Since then a lot have changed and now allnoconfig builds just fine without ARCH_SELECT_MEMORY_MODEL, so it can be removed. To support protected virtualization cio will need to make sure the memory used for communication with the hypervisor is DMA memory. Let us introduce one global pool for cio. Our DMA pools are implemented as a gen_pool backed with DMA pages. The idea is to avoid each allocation effectively wasting a page, as we typically allocate much less than PAGE_SIZE. On s390, protected virtualization guests have to use bounced I/O buffers. That requires some plumbing. Let us make sure, any device that uses DMA API with direct ops correctly is spared from the problems, that a hypervisor attempting I/O to a non-shared page would bring. Convert all text files with s390 documentation to ReST format. Tried to preserve as much as possible the original document format. Still, some of the files required some work in order for it to be visible on both plain text and after converted to html. The conversion is actually: - add blank lines and identation in order to identify paragraphs; - fix tables markups; - add some lists markups; - mark literal blocks; - adjust title markups. At its new index.rst, let's add a :orphan: while this is not linked to the main index.rst file, in order to avoid build warnings. x86 and powerpc (partially) enforce already CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU. On s390 it is enabled on all distributions by default since ages. The only exception is our zfcpdump kernel. However to simplify testing, enforce HOTPLUG_CPU. This was suggested by Paul McKenney, since his rcutorture test environments for CONFIG_SMP=y only support HOTPLUG_CPU=y. Suggested-by: NPaul E. There never have been distributions that shiped with CONFIG_SMP=n for s390. In addition the kernel currently doesn't even compile with CONFIG_SMP=n for s390. Most likely it wouldn't even work, even if we fix the compile error, since nobody tests it, since there is no use case that I can think of. Therefore simply enforce CONFIG_SMP and get rid of some more or less unused code. Most architectures do not need the memblock memory after the page allocator is initialized, but only few enable ARCH_DISCARD_MEMBLOCK in the arch Kconfig. Replacing ARCH_DISCARD_MEMBLOCK with ARCH_KEEP_MEMBLOCK and inverting the logic makes it clear which architectures actually use memblock after system initialization and skips the necessity to add ARCH_DISCARD_MEMBLOCK to the architectures that are still missing that option. VIRT_TO_BUS is only used for legacy device PCI and ISA drivers using virt_to_bus() instead of the streaming DMA mapping API, and the remaining drivers generally don't work on 64-bit architectures. Two of these drivers also cause a build warning on s390, so instead of trying to fix that, let's just disable the option as we do on most architectures now. llvm does does not understand -march=z9-109 and older target specifiers, so disable the respective Kconfig settings and the logic to make the boot code work on old systems when building with clang. Part of the early boot code is normally compiled with -march=z900 for maximum compatibility. This also has to get changed with clang to the oldest supported ISA, which is -march=z10 here. The Ultravisor Call Facility (stfle bit 158) defines an API to the Ultravisor (UV calls), a mini hypervisor located at machine level. With help of the Ultravisor, KVM will be able to run "protected" VMs, special VMs whose memory and management data are unavailable to KVM. The protected VMs can also request services from the Ultravisor. The guest api consists of UV calls to share and unshare memory with the kvm hypervisor. To enable this feature support PROTECTED_VIRTUALIZATION_GUEST kconfig option has been introduced. Currently, we have two different implementation of rwsem: 1) CONFIG_RWSEM_GENERIC_SPINLOCK (rwsem-spinlock.c) 2) CONFIG_RWSEM_XCHGADD_ALGORITHM (rwsem-xadd.c) As we are going to use a single generic implementation for rwsem-xadd.c and no architecture-specific code will be needed, there is no point in keeping two different implementations of rwsem. In most cases, the performance of rwsem-spinlock.c will be worse. It also doesn't get all the performance tuning and optimizations that had been implemented in rwsem-xadd.c over the years. For simplication, we are going to remove rwsem-spinlock.c and make all architectures use a single implementation of rwsem - rwsem-xadd.c. Any system call that takes a pointer argument on s390 requires a wrapper function to do a 31-to-64 zero-extension, these are currently generated in arch/s390/kernel/compat_wrapper.c. On arm64 and x86, we already generate similar wrappers for all system calls in the place of their definition, just for a different purpose (they load the arguments from pt_regs). We can do the same thing here, by adding an asm/syscall_wrapper.h file with a copy of all the relevant macros to override the generic version. Besides the addition of the compat entry point, these also rename the entry points with a __s390_ or __s390x_ prefix, similar to what we do on arm64 and x86. This in turn requires renaming a few things, and adding a proper ni_syscall() entry point. In order to still compile system call definitions that pass an loff_t argument, the __SC_COMPAT_CAST() macro checks for that and forces an -ENOSYS error, which was the best I could come up with. Those functions must obviously not get called from user space, but instead require hand-written compat_sys_*() handlers, which fortunately already exist. s390 has an almost identical copy of the code in kernel/uid16.c. The problem here is that it requires calling the regular system calls, which the generic implementation handles correctly, but the internal interfaces are not declared in a global header for this. The best way forward here seems to be to just use the generic code and delete the s390 specific implementation. I keep the changes to uapi/asm/posix_types.h inside of an #ifdef check so user space does not observe any changes. As some of the system calls pass pointers, we also need wrappers in compat_wrapper.c, which I add for all calls with at least one argument. All those wrappers can be removed in a later step. The Kconfig lexer supports special characters such as '.' and '/' in the parameter context. In my understanding, the reason is just to support bare file paths in the source statement. I do not see a good reason to complicate Kconfig for the room of ambiguity. The majority of code already surrounds file paths with double quotes, and it makes sense since file paths are constant string literals. Make it treewide consistent now. All architectures except for sparc64 use the dma-direct code in some form, and even for sparc64 we had the discussion of a direct mapping mode a while ago. In preparation for directly calling the direct mapping code don't bother having it optionally but always build the code in. This is a minor hardship for some powerpc and arm configs that don't pull it in yet (although they should in a relase ot two), and sparc64 which currently doesn't need it at all, but it will reduce the ifdef mess we'd otherwise need significantly. These days architectures are mostly out of the business of dealing with struct scatterlist at all, unless they have architecture specific iommu drivers. Replace the ARCH_HAS_SG_CHAIN symbol with a ARCH_NO_SG_CHAIN one only enabled for architectures with horrible legacy iommu drivers like alpha and parisc, and conditionally for arm which wants to keep it disable for legacy platforms. Move the definitions to drivers/pci and let the architectures select them. Two small differences to before: PCI_DOMAINS_GENERIC now selects PCI_DOMAINS, cutting down the churn for modern architectures. As the only architectured arm did previously also offer PCI_DOMAINS as a user visible choice in addition to selecting it from the relevant configs, this is gone now. There is no good reason to duplicate the PCI menu in every architecture. Instead provide a selectable HAVE_PCI symbol that indicates availability of PCI support, and a FORCE_PCI symbol to for PCI on and the handle the rest in drivers/pci. By default 3-level paging is used when the kernel is compiled with kasan support. Add 4-level paging option to support systems with more then 3TB of physical memory and to cover 4-level paging specific code with kasan as well. Kasan needs 1/8 of kernel virtual address space to be reserved as the shadow area. And eventually it requires the shadow memory offset to be known at compile time (passed to the compiler when full instrumentation is enabled). Any value picked as the shadow area offset for 3-level paging would eat up identity mapping on 4-level paging (with 1PB shadow area size). So, the kernel sticks to 3-level paging when kasan is enabled. 3TB border is picked as the shadow offset. The memory layout is adjusted so, that physical memory border does not exceed KASAN_SHADOW_START and vmemmap does not go below KASAN_SHADOW_END. Due to the fact that on s390 paging is set up very late and to cover more code with kasan instrumentation, temporary identity mapping and final shadow memory are set up early. The shadow memory mapping is later carried over to init_mm.pgd during paging_init. For the needs of paging structures allocation and shadow memory population a primitive allocator is used, which simply chops off memory blocks from the end of the physical memory. Kasan currenty doesn't track vmemmap and vmalloc areas. With virtually mapped kernel stacks the kernel stack overflow detection is now fault based, every stack has a guard page in the vmalloc space. The panic_stack is renamed to nodat_stack and is used for all function that need to run without DAT, e.g. memcpy_real or do_start_kdump. The main effect is a reduction in the kernel image size as with vmap stacks the old style overflow checking that adds two instructions per function is not needed anymore. Result from bloat-o-meter: add/remove: 20/1 grow/shrink: 13/26854 up/down: 2198/-216240 (-214042) In regard to performance the micro-benchmark for fork has a hit of a few microseconds, allocating 4 pages in vmalloc space is more expensive compare to an order-2 page allocation. Introduces a new AP device driver. This device driver is built on the VFIO mediated device framework. The framework provides sysfs interfaces that facilitate passthrough access by guests to devices installed on the linux host. The VFIO AP device driver will serve two purposes: 1. Provide the interfaces to reserve AP devices for exclusive use by KVM guests. This is accomplished by unbinding the devices to be reserved for guest usage from the zcrypt device driver and binding them to the VFIO AP device driver. 2. Implements the functions, callbacks and sysfs attribute interfaces required to create one or more VFIO mediated devices each of which will be used to configure the AP matrix for a guest and serve as a file descriptor for facilitating communication between QEMU and the VFIO AP device driver. When the VFIO AP device driver is initialized: * It registers with the AP bus for control of type 10 (CEX4 and newer) AP queue devices. This limitation was imposed due to: 1. A desire to keep the code as simple as possible; 2. Some older models are no longer supported by the kernel and others are getting close to end of service. 3. A lack of older systems on which to test older devices. The probe and remove callbacks will be provided to support the binding/unbinding of AP queue devices to/from the VFIO AP device driver. * Creates a matrix device, /sys/devices/vfio_ap/matrix, to serve as the parent of the mediated devices created, one for each guest, and to hold the APQNs of the AP devices bound to the VFIO AP device driver. Utilize -mfentry and -mnop-mcount gcc options together with -mrecord-mcount to get compiler generated calls to the profiling functions as nops which are compatible with current -mhotpatch=0,3 approach. At the same time -mrecord-mcount enables __mcount_loc section generation by the compiler which allows to avoid using scripts/recordmcount.pl script.
