      x86/fpu: Don't export __kernel_fpu_{begin,end}() · d4ff57d0

      There is one user of __kernel_fpu_begin() and before invoking it,
      it invokes preempt_disable(). So it could invoke kernel_fpu_begin()
      right away. The 32bit version of arch_efi_call_virt_setup() and
      arch_efi_call_virt_teardown() does this already.
      
      The comment above *kernel_fpu*() claims that before invoking
      __kernel_fpu_begin() preemption should be disabled and that KVM is a
      good example of doing it. Well, KVM doesn't do that since commit
      
        f775b13e ("x86,kvm: move qemu/guest FPU switching out to vcpu_run")
      
      so it is not an example anymore.
      
      With EFI gone as the last user of __kernel_fpu_{begin|end}(), both can
      be made static and not exported anymore.

      x86/build: Mark per-CPU symbols as absolute explicitly for LLD · 648b949b

      Accessing per-CPU variables is done by finding the offset of the
      variable in the per-CPU block and adding it to the address of the
      respective CPU's block.
      
      Section 3.10.8 of ld.bfd's documentation states:
      
        For expressions involving numbers, relative addresses and absolute
        addresses, ld follows these rules to evaluate terms:
      
        Other binary operations, that is, between two relative addresses
        not in the same section, or between a relative address and an
        absolute address, first convert any non-absolute term to an
        absolute address before applying the operator."
      
      Note that LLVM's linker does not adhere to the GNU ld's implementation
      and as such requires implicitly-absolute terms to be explicitly marked
      as absolute in the linker script. If not, it fails currently with:
      
        ld.lld: error: ./arch/x86/kernel/vmlinux.lds:153: at least one side of the expression must be absolute
        ld.lld: error: ./arch/x86/kernel/vmlinux.lds:154: at least one side of the expression must be absolute
        Makefile:1040: recipe for target 'vmlinux' failed
      
      This is not a functional change for ld.bfd which converts the term to an
      absolute symbol anyways as specified above.

      x86/unwind: Add hardcoded ORC entry for NULL · 206a76a6

      When the ORC unwinder is invoked for an oops caused by IP==0,
      it currently has no idea what to do because there is no debug information
      for the stack frame of NULL.
      
      But if RIP is NULL, it is very likely that the last successfully executed
      instruction was an indirect CALL/JMP, and it is possible to unwind out in
      the same way as for the first instruction of a normal function. Hardcode
      a corresponding ORC entry.
      
      With an artificially-added NULL call in prctl_set_seccomp(), before this
      patch, the trace is:

      When the frame unwinder is invoked for an oops caused by a call to NULL, it
      currently skips the parent function because BP still points to the parent's
      stack frame; the (nonexistent) current function only has the first half of
      a stack frame, and BP doesn't point to it yet.
      
      Add a special case for IP==0 that calculates a fake BP from SP, then uses
      the real BP for the next frame.
      
      Note that this handles first_frame specially: Return information about the
      parent function as long as the saved IP is >=first_frame, even if the fake
      BP points below it.
      
      With an artificially-added NULL call in prctl_set_seccomp(), before this

      x86/microcode/amd: Don't falsely trick the late loading mechanism · f964a4d2

      The load_microcode_amd() function searches for microcode patches and
      attempts to apply a microcode patch if it is of different level than the
      currently installed level.
      
      While the processor won't actually load a level that is less than
      what is already installed, the logic wrongly returns UCODE_NEW thus
      signaling to its caller reload_store() that a late loading should be
      attempted.
      
      If the file-system contains an older microcode revision than what is
      currently running, such a late microcode reload can result in these
      misleading messages:
      
        x86/CPU: CPU features have changed after loading microcode, but might not take effect.
        x86/CPU: Please consider either early loading through initrd/built-in or a potential BIOS update.
      
      These messages were issued on a system where SME/SEV are not
      enabled by the BIOS (MSR C001_0010[23] = 0b) because during boot,
      early_detect_mem_encrypt() is called and cleared the SME and SEV
      features in this case.
      
      However, after the wrong late load attempt, get_cpu_cap() is called and
      reloads the SME and SEV feature bits, resulting in the messages.
      
      Update the microcode level check to not attempt microcode loading if the
      current level is greater than(!) and not only equal to the current patch
      level.

      irq/matrix: Spread managed interrupts on allocation · 8cae7757

      Linux spreads out the non managed interrupt across the possible target CPUs
      to avoid vector space exhaustion.
      
      Managed interrupts are treated differently, as for them the vectors are
      reserved (with guarantee) when the interrupt descriptors are initialized.
      
      When the interrupt is requested a real vector is assigned. The assignment
      logic uses the first CPU in the affinity mask for assignment. If the
      interrupt has more than one CPU in the affinity mask, which happens when a
      multi queue device has less queues than CPUs, then doing the same search as
      for non managed interrupts makes sense as it puts the interrupt on the
      least interrupt plagued CPU. For single CPU affine vectors that's obviously
      a NOOP.
      
      Restructre the matrix allocation code so it does the 'best CPU' search, add
      the sanity check for an empty affinity mask and adapt the call site in the
      x86 vector management code.

      x86/MCE: Initialize mce.bank in the case of a fatal error in mce_no_way_out() · 5b27e3bc

      Internal injection testing crashed with a console log that said:
      
        mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 7: Machine Check Exception: f Bank 0: bd80000000100134
      
      This caused a lot of head scratching because the MCACOD (bits 15:0) of
      that status is a signature from an L1 data cache error. But Linux says
      that it found it in "Bank 0", which on this model CPU only reports L1
      instruction cache errors.
      
      The answer was that Linux doesn't initialize "m->bank" in the case that
      it finds a fatal error in the mce_no_way_out() pre-scan of banks. If
      this was a local machine check, then this partially initialized struct
      mce is being passed to mce_panic().
      
      Fix is simple: just initialize m->bank in the case of a fatal error.

      cpu/hotplug: Fix "SMT disabled by BIOS" detection for KVM · 97a7fa90

      With the following commit:
      
        73d5e2b4 ("cpu/hotplug: detect SMT disabled by BIOS")
      
      ... the hotplug code attempted to detect when SMT was disabled by BIOS,
      in which case it reported SMT as permanently disabled.  However, that
      code broke a virt hotplug scenario, where the guest is booted with only
      primary CPU threads, and a sibling is brought online later.
      
      The problem is that there doesn't seem to be a way to reliably
      distinguish between the HW "SMT disabled by BIOS" case and the virt
      "sibling not yet brought online" case.  So the above-mentioned commit
      was a bit misguided, as it permanently disabled SMT for both cases,
      preventing future virt sibling hotplugs.
      
      Going back and reviewing the original problems which were attempted to
      be solved by that commit, when SMT was disabled in BIOS:
      
        1) /sys/devices/system/cpu/smt/control showed "on" instead of
           "notsupported"; and
      
        2) vmx_vm_init() was incorrectly showing the L1TF_MSG_SMT warning.
      
      I'd propose that we instead consider #1 above to not actually be a
      problem.  Because, at least in the virt case, it's possible that SMT
      wasn't disabled by BIOS and a sibling thread could be brought online
      later.  So it makes sense to just always default the smt control to "on"
      to allow for that possibility (assuming cpuid indicates that the CPU
      supports SMT).
      
      The real problem is #2, which has a simple fix: change vmx_vm_init() to
      query the actual current SMT state -- i.e., whether any siblings are
      currently online -- instead of looking at the SMT "control" sysfs value.
      
      So fix it by:
      
        a) reverting the original "fix" and its followup fix:
      
           73d5e2b4 ("cpu/hotplug: detect SMT disabled by BIOS")
           bc2d8d26 ("cpu/hotplug: Fix SMT supported evaluation")
      
           and
      
        b) changing vmx_vm_init() to query the actual current SMT state --
           instead of the sysfs control value -- to determine whether the L1TF
           warning is needed.  This also requires the 'sched_smt_present'
           variable to exported, instead of 'cpu_smt_control'.

      nr_cpu_ids can be limited on the command line via nr_cpus=. This can break the
      logical package management because it results in a smaller number of packages
      while in kdump kernel.
      
      Check below case:
      There is a two sockets system, each socket has 8 cores, which has 16 logical
      cpus while HT was turn on.

      While starting the kdump kernel with command line option nr_cpus=16 panic
      was triggered on one of the cpus 24-31 eg. 26, then online cpu will be
      1-15, 26(cpu 0 was disabled in kdump), ncpus will be 16 and
      __max_logical_packages will be 1, but actually two packages were booted on.
      
      This issue can reproduced by set kdump option nr_cpus=<real physical core
      numbers>, and then trigger panic on last socket's thread, for example:
      
      taskset -c 26 echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger
      
      Use total_cpus which will not be limited by nr_cpus command line to calculate
      the value of __max_logical_packages.
