SPCR is currently only enabled or ARM64 and x86 can use SPCR to setup an early console. General fixes include updating Documentation & Kconfig (for x86), updating comments, and changing parse_spcr() to acpi_parse_spcr(), and earlycon_init_is_deferred to earlycon_acpi_spcr_enable to be more descriptive. On x86, many systems have a valid SPCR table but the table version is not 2 so the table version check must be a warning. On ARM64 when the kernel parameter earlycon is used both the early console and console are enabled. On x86, only the earlycon should be enabled by by default. Modify acpi_parse_spcr() to allow options for initializing the early console and console separately. The ARM architecture defines the memory locations that are permitted to be accessed as the result of a speculative instruction fetch from an exception level for which all stages of translation are disabled. Specifically, the core is permitted to speculatively fetch from the 4KB region containing the current program counter 4K and next 4K. When translation is changed from enabled to disabled for the running exception level (SCTLR_ELn[M] changed from a value of 1 to 0), the Falkor core may errantly speculatively access memory locations outside of the 4KB region permitted by the architecture. The errant memory access may lead to one of the following unexpected behaviors. 1) A System Error Interrupt (SEI) being raised by the Falkor core due to the errant memory access attempting to access a region of memory that is protected by a slave-side memory protection unit. 2) Unpredictable device behavior due to a speculative read from device memory. This behavior may only occur if the instruction cache is disabled prior to or coincident with translation being changed from enabled to disabled. The conditions leading to this erratum will not occur when either of the following occur: 1) A higher exception level disables translation of a lower exception level (e.g. EL2 changing SCTLR_EL1[M] from a value of 1 to 0). 2) An exception level disabling its stage-1 translation if its stage-2 translation is enabled (e.g. EL1 changing SCTLR_EL1[M] from a value of 1 to 0 when HCR_EL2[VM] has a value of 1). To avoid the errant behavior, software must execute an ISB immediately prior to executing the MSR that will change SCTLR_ELn[M] from 1 to 0. Support the AFS dynamic root which is a pseudo-volume that doesn't connect to any server resource, but rather is just a root directory that dynamically creates mountpoint directories where the name of such a directory is the name of the cell. Such a mount can be created thus: mount -t afs none /afs -o dyn Dynamic root superblocks aren't shared except by bind mounts and propagation. Cell root volumes can then be mounted by referring to them by name, e.g.: ls /afs/grand.central.org/ ls /afs/.grand.central.org/ The kernel will upcall to consult the DNS if the address wasn't supplied directly. This guide is an adapted version of the more general "Protecting Code Integrity" guide written and maintained by The Linux Foundation IT for use with open-source projects. It provides the oft-lacking guidance on the following topics: - how to properly protect one's PGP keys to minimize the risks of them being stolen and used maliciously to impersonate a kernel developer - how to configure Git to properly use GnuPG - when and how to use PGP with Git - how to verify fellow Linux Kernel developer identities I believe this document should live with the rest of the documentation describing proper processes one should follow when participating in kernel development. Placing it in a wiki on some place like kernel.org would be insufficient for a number of reasons -- primarily, because only a relatively small subset of maintainers have accounts on kernel.org, but also because even those who do rarely remember that such wiki exists. Keeping it with the rest of in-kernel docs should hopefully give it more visibility, but also help keep it up-to-date as tools and processes evolve. hugepages_treat_as_movable has been introduced by 396faf03 ("Allow huge page allocations to use GFP_HIGH_MOVABLE") to allow hugetlb allocations from ZONE_MOVABLE even when hugetlb pages were not migrateable. The purpose of the movable zone was different at the time. It aimed at reducing memory fragmentation and hugetlb pages being long lived and large werre not contributing to the fragmentation so it was acceptable to use the zone back then. Things have changed though and the primary purpose of the zone became migratability guarantee. If we allow non migrateable hugetlb pages to be in ZONE_MOVABLE memory hotplug might fail to offline the memory. Remove the knob and only rely on hugepage_migration_supported to allow movable zones. Mel said: : Primarily it was aimed at allowing the hugetlb pool to safely shrink with : the ability to grow it again. The use case was for batched jobs, some of : which needed huge pages and others that did not but didn't want the memory : useless pinned in the huge pages pool. : : I suspect that more users rely on THP than hugetlbfs for flexible use of : huge pages with fallback options so I think that removing the option : should be ok. Currently we display some hugepage statistics (total, free, etc) in /proc/meminfo, but only for default hugepage size (e.g. 2Mb). If hugepages of different sizes are used (like 2Mb and 1Gb on x86-64), /proc/meminfo output can be confusing, as non-default sized hugepages are not reflected at all, and there are no signs that they are existing and consuming system memory. To solve this problem, let's display the total amount of memory, consumed by hugetlb pages of all sized (both free and used). Let's call it "Hugetlb", and display size in kB to match generic /proc/meminfo style. The 'noreplace-paravirt' option disables paravirt patching, leaving the original pv indirect calls in place. That's highly incompatible with retpolines, unless we want to uglify paravirt even further and convert the paravirt calls to retpolines. As far as I can tell, the option doesn't seem to be useful for much other than introducing surprising corner cases and making the kernel vulnerable to Spectre v2. It was probably a debug option from the early paravirt days. So just remove it. The QS21/22 IBM Cell blades had a southbridge chip called Axon. This could have DDR DIMMs attached to it, though they were not directly usable as RAM, instead they could be used as some sort of buffer, if applications were written specifically to use the block device provided by the driver. Although the driver supposedly had direct access support, it was apparently never tested (see commit 91117a20 ("axonram: Fix bug in direct_access")). These machines have not been available for over 5 years, and were never widely in use. It seems highly unlikely anyone is using this driver. In general we're happy to leave old drivers in the tree, but because DAX is involved this driver is caught up in the ongoing work in that area, but none of the DAX folks are able to test it. As explained by Michal Marek at https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/8/31/189 silentoldconfig has become a misnomer. It has become an internal interface so remove it from "make help" and Documentation/ to stop confusing people using it as seen for instance at https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/835632 Don't remove it from kconfig/Makefile yet not to break any (other) tool using it. The MMS114 platform data has no in-tree users, so drop it. Switch to using the standard touchscreen properties via touchscreen_parse_properties(), and move the old DT parsing code to use device_property_*() APIs. Finally, use touchscreen_report_pos to report x/y coordinates and drop the custom x/y inversion code.
