Eliminate plane->state and crtc->state usage from intel_plane_atomic_check_with_state() and its callers. Instead pass the proper states in or dig them up from the top level atomic state. Add DRM_MODE_ROTATE_ and DRM_MODE_REFLECT_ defines to the UAPI as a convenience. Ideally the DRM_ROTATE_ and DRM_REFLECT_ property ids are looked up through the atomic API, but realizing that userspace is likely to take shortcuts and assume that the enum values are what is sent over the wire. As a result these defines are provided purely as a convenience to userspace applications. It has been suggested that having per-plane modifiers is making life more difficult for userspace, so let's just retire modifier[1-3] and use modifier[0] to apply to the entire framebuffer. Obviosuly this means that if individual planes need different tiling layouts and whatnot we will need a new modifier for each combination of planes with different tiling layouts. For a bit of extra backwards compatilbilty the kernel will allow non-zero modifier[1+] but it require that they will match modifier[0]. This in case there's existing userspace out there that sets modifier[1+] to something non-zero with planar formats. The function's behaviour was changed in 90844f00, without changing its signature, causing people to keep using it the old way without realising they were now leaking memory. Rob Clark also noticed it was also allocating GFP_KERNEL memory in atomic contexts, breaking them. Instead of having to allocate GFP_ATOMIC memory and fixing the callers to make them cleanup the memory afterwards, let's change the function's signature by having the caller take care of the memory and passing it to the function. The new parameter is a single-field struct in order to enforce the size of its buffer and help callers to correctly manage their memory. In preparation to support many distinct timelines, we need to expand the activity tracking on the GEM object to handle more than just a request per engine. We already use the struct reservation_object on the dma-buf to handle many fence contexts, so integrating that into the GEM object itself is the preferred solution. (For example, we can now share the same reservation_object between every consumer/producer using this buffer and skip the manual import/export via dma-buf.) v2: Reimplement busy-ioctl (by walking the reservation object), postpone the ABI change for another day. Similarly use the reservation object to find the last_write request (if active and from i915) for choosing display CS flips. Caveats: * busy-ioctl: busy-ioctl only reports on the native fences, it will not warn of stalls (in set-domain-ioctl, pread/pwrite etc) if the object is being rendered to by external fences. It also will not report the same busy state as wait-ioctl (or polling on the dma-buf) in the same circumstances. On the plus side, it does retain reporting of which *i915* engines are engaged with this object. * non-blocking atomic modesets take a step backwards as the wait for render completion blocks the ioctl. This is fixed in a subsequent patch to use a fence instead for awaiting on the rendering, see "drm/i915: Restore nonblocking awaits for modesetting" * dynamic array manipulation for shared-fences in reservation is slower than the previous lockless static assignment (e.g. gem_exec_lut_handle runtime on ivb goes from 42s to 66s), mainly due to atomic operations (maintaining the fence refcounts). * loss of object-level retirement callbacks, emulated by VMA retirement tracking. * minor loss of object-level last activity information from debugfs, could be replaced with per-vma information if desired Signed-off-by: NChris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk> Reviewed-by: NJoonas Lahtinen <joonas.lahtinen@linux.intel.com> Link: http://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20161028125858.23563-21-chris@chris-wilson.co.uk

"drm/i915: Make unpin async" doesn't handle the unthrottled cursor updates correctly, leading to an apparent pin count leak. This is caught by the WARN_ON in i915_gem_object_do_pin which screams if we have more than DRM_I915_GEM_OBJECT_MAX_PIN_COUNT pins. Unfortuantely we can't just revert these two because this patch series came with a built-in bisect breakage in the form of temporarily removing the unthrottled cursor update hack for legacy cursor ioctl. Therefore there's no other option than to revert the entire pile :( There's one tiny conflict in intel_drv.h due to other patches, nothing serious. Normally I'd wait a bit longer with doing a maintainer revert, but since the minimal set of patches we need to revert (due to the bisect breakage) is so big, time is running out fast. And very soon (especially after a few attempts at fixing issues) it'll be really hard to revert things cleanly. Lessons learned: - Not a good idea to rush the review (done by someone fairly new to the area) and not make sure domain experts had a chance to read it. - Patches should be properly split up. I only looked at the two patches that should be reverted in detail, but both look like the mix up different things in one patch. - Patches really should have proper commit messages. Especially when doing more than one thing, and especially when touching critical and tricky core code. - Building a patch series and r-b stamping it when it has a built-in bisect breakage is not a good idea. - I also think we need to stop building up technical debt by postponing atomic igt testcases even longer. I think it's clear that there's enough corner cases in this beast that we really need to have the testcases _before_ the next step lands. When the crtc is configured but not active we currently clip to (0,0)x(0,0). This results in differences in calculations depending on dpms setting. When the crtc is enabled but not active run check_plane as if it were on, but afterwards set plane_state->visible = false for the checks. Replace the drivers own logic for computing mode_changed, active_changed and planes_changed flags with the check_modeset() atomic helper. Since that function needs to compare the crtc's new mode with the current, this patch also moves the set up of crtc_state->mode earlier in the call chain. Note that for the call to check_plane() to work properly, we need to check new plane state against new crtc state. But since we still use the plane update helper, which doesn't have a full atomic state, we need to hack around that in intel_plane_atomic_check(). It's a silly thing to do and surprises driver writers. Most likely this did already blow up for exynos. It's also a silly thing to change plane state when it's off, but fbdev is silly (it does an unconditional modeset over all planes). And userspace can be evil. So I think we need this. With this check in the helpers we can remove the one in i915 code for the same conditions (becuase ->crtc iff ->fb).
