Future AMD processors, starting with Family 16h, can provide software with feedback on how the workload may respond to frequency change -- memory-bound workloads will not benefit from higher frequency, where as compute-bound workloads will. This patch enables this "frequency sensitivity feedback" to aid the ondemand governor to make better frequency change decisions by hooking into the powersave bias. Load order is important in order for intel_pstate to take over as the default scaling driver from acpi-cpufreq. If both are built-in, acpi-cpufreq uses late_initcall() and intel_pstate uses device_initcall() so it will be able to register as the scaling before acpi-cpufreq for the processors supported by intel_pstate. If acpi-cpufreq is built as a module then intel_pstate still gets first option to become the scaling driver. Add a P-state driver for the Intel Sandy bridge processor. In cpufreq terminology this driver implements a scaling driver with an internal governor. When built into the the kernel this driver will be the preferred scaling driver for Sandy bridge processors. In addition to the interfaces provided by the cpufreq subsystem for controlling scaling drivers. The user may control the behavior of the driver via three sysfs files located in "/sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate". max_perf_pct: limits the maximum P state that will be requested by the driver stated as a percentage of the avail performance. min_perf_pct: limits the minimum P state that will be requested by the driver stated as a percentage of the avail performance. no_turbo: limits the driver to selecting P states below the turbo frequency range. Andreas reports in https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51741 that with his Gentoo config, acpi-cpufreq wasn't enabled and powernow-k8 couldn't handoff properly to acpi-cpufreq leading to running without P-state support (i.e., cores are constantly in P0). To alleaviate that, we need to make powernow-k8 depend on acpi-cpufreq so that acpi-cpufreq is always present. The powernow-k8 driver supported a sysfs knob called "cpb", which was instantiated per CPU, but actually acted globally for the whole system. To keep some compatibility with this feature, we re-introduce this behavior here, but: a) only enable it on AMD CPUs and b) protect it with a Kconfig switch I'd like to consider this feature obsolete. The programming model for P-states on modern AMD CPUs is very similar to that of Intel and VIA. It makes sense to consolidate this support into one driver rather than duplicating functionality between two of them. This patch adds support for AMDs with hardware P-state control to acpi-cpufreq. Processor Clocking Control (PCC) is an interface between the BIOS and OSPM. Based on the server workload, OSPM can request what frequency it expects from a logical CPU, and the BIOS will achieve that frequency transparently. This patch introduces driver support for PCC. OSPM uses the PCC driver to communicate with the BIOS via the PCC interface. There is a Documentation file that provides a link to the PCC Specification, and also provides a summary of the PCC interface. Currently, certain HP ProLiant platforms implement the PCC interface. However, any platform whose BIOS implements the PCC Specification, can utilize this driver. V2 --> V1 changes (based on Dominik's suggestions): - Removed the dependency on CPU_FREQ_TABLE - "cpufreq_stats" will no longer PANIC. Actually, it will not load anymore because it is not applicable. - Removed the sanity check for target frequency in the ->target routine. NOTE: A patch to sanitize the target frequency requested by "ondemand" is needed to ensure that the target freq < policy->min. Can this driver be queued up for the 2.6.33 tree? The e_powersaver driver for VIA's C7 CPU's needs to be marked as DANGEROUS as it configures the CPU to power states that are out of specification. According to Centaur, all systems with C7 and Nano CPU's support the ACPI p-state method. Thus, the acpi-cpufreq driver should be used instead. powernow-k8 driver should always try to get cpufreq info from ACPI. Otherwise it will not be able to detect the transition latency correctly which results in ondemand governor taking a wrong sampling rate which will then result in sever performance loss. Let the user not shoot himself in the foot and always compile in ACPI support for powernow-k8. This also fixes a wrong message if ACPI_PROCESSOR is compiled as a module and #ifndef CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR path is chosen. powernow-k8 really needs to use ACPI to function on SMP systems. The current Kconfig allows us to build kernels which fail mysteriously for some users due to us trying to automatically enable this, and getting it wrong. This is driver for Enhanced Powersaver which is present in VIA C7 processors. Beta tested by Jorgen (jorgen (at) greven dot dk). Thanks! Based on documentation provided by Dave Jones (Thanks!) and C7 Eden datasheet available from www.via.com.tw. Looks like all these C7 Eden CPU's don't have P-states in BIOS. I know that 2 p-states is low, but Jorgen finds it usefull anyway because board is passive cooled. There are 3 different types of C7 processors (called brands): 0. C7-M - these processors can set any maultiplier between min and max, any voltage between min and max. 1. C7 - only min and max states are supported. Voltage is different for min and max states. 2. Eden - only min and max states are supported. Looks like this brand can only change multiplier. Voltage seems to be the same for min and max frequency. Mark ACPI hooks in speedstep-centrino as deprecated. Change the order in which speedstep-centrino and acpi-cpufreq (when both are in kernel) will be added. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
