This removes statically assigned platform numbers and reworks the powerpc platform probe code to use a better mechanism. With this, board support files can simply declare a new machine type with a macro, and implement a probe() function that uses the flattened device-tree to detect if they apply for a given machine. We now have a machine_is() macro that replaces the comparisons of _machine with the various PLATFORM_* constants. This commit also changes various drivers to use the new macro instead of looking at _machine. This patch removes all self references and fixes references to files in the now defunct arch/ppc64 tree. I think this accomplises everything wanted, though there might be a few references I missed. Signed-off-by: NJon Mason <jdmason@us.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: NPaul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>

The flattened device tree is the only supported way of booting ARCH=powerpc kernels on non Open Firmware machines. The documentation for the flattened tree format and contents has been discussed on mailing lists and lately has been living in the dtc git tree. Really, it ought to go in the kernel's Documentation directory for maximum visibility. Leave the overloaded "hotplug" word to susbsystems which are handling real devices. The driver core does not "plug" anything, it just exports the state to userspace and generates events. Signed-off-by: NKay Sievers <kay.sievers@suse.de> Signed-off-by: NGreg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

The driver model has a "detach_state" mechanism that: - Has never been used by any in-kernel drive; - Is superfluous, since driver remove() methods can do the same thing; - Became buggy when the suspend() parameter changed semantics and type; - Could self-deadlock when called from certain suspend contexts; - Is effectively wasted documentation, object code, and headspace. This removes that "detach_state" mechanism; net code shrink, as well as a per-device saving in the driver model and sysfs. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
