In order to support accesses to larger chunks of memory, pass in a 'size' parameter (counted in bytes), and return the amount available at that address. Add a new helper function, bdev_direct_access(), to handle common functionality including partition handling, checking the length requested is positive, checking for the sector being page-aligned, and checking the length of the request does not pass the end of the partition. Commit 8e3dffc6 "Ext2: mark inode dirty after the function dquot_free_block_nodirty is called" unveiled a bug in __ext2_get_block() called from ext2_get_xip_mem(). That function called ext2_get_block() mistakenly asking it to map 0 blocks while 1 was intended. Before the above mentioned commit things worked out fine by luck but after that commit we started returning that we allocated 0 blocks while we in fact allocated 1 block and thus allocation was looping until all blocks in the filesystem were exhausted. Fix the problem by properly asking for one block and also add assertion in ext2_get_blocks() to catch similar problems. Convert XIP to support non-struct page backed memory, using VM_MIXEDMAP for the user mappings. This requires the get_xip_page API to be changed to an address based one. Improve the API layering a little bit too, while we're here. This is required in order to support XIP filesystems on memory that isn't backed with struct page (but memory with struct page is still supported too). Alter the block device ->direct_access() API to work with the new get_xip_mem() API (that requires both kaddr and pfn are returned). Some architectures will not do the right thing in their virt_to_page() for use by XIP (to translate from the kernel virtual address returned by direct_access(), to a user mappable pfn in XIP's page fault handler. However, we can't switch it to just return the pfn and not the kaddr, because we have no good way to get a kva from a pfn, and XIP requires the kva for its read(2) and write(2) handlers. So we have to return both. Oliver Paukstadt from our test department is testing the xip patches in Linus' git-tree. He found a problem that shows when reading a file that contains sparse blocks (holes) on a -o xip mounted ext2 filesystem: the BUG_ON() in fs/ext2/xip.c:40 triggers where it should not. The problem was introduced by a cleanup in my previous patch, this patch fixes it. This patch includes feedback from Andrew and Christoph. Thanks for taking time to review. Use of empty_zero_page was eliminated to fix compilation for architectures that don't have it. This patch removes setting pages up-to-date in ext2_get_xip_page and all bug checks to verify that the page is indeed up to date. Setting the page state on mapping to userland is bogus. None of the code patchs involved with these pages in mm cares about the page state. still on my ToDo list: identify a place outside second extended where __inode_direct_access should reside Signed-off-by: NCarsten Otte <cotte@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: NAndrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: NLinus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

These are the ext2 related parts. Ext2 now uses the xip_* file operations along with the get_xip_page aop when mounted with -o xip. Signed-off-by: NCarsten Otte <cotte@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: NAndrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: NLinus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
