Commit 15b8dd53 changed info->hardware_id from a static array to a pointer. If hardware_id is non-NULL, it points to a NULL-terminated string, so we don't need to terminate it explicitly. However, it may be NULL; in that case, we *can't* add a NULL terminator. This causes a NULL pointer dereference oops for devices without _HID. Completed a major update for the acpi_get_object_info external interface. Changes include: - Support for variable, unlimited length HID, UID, and CID strings - Support Processor objects the same as Devices (HID,UID,CID,ADR,STA, etc.) - Call the _SxW power methods on behalf of a device object - Determine if a device is a PCI root bridge - Change the ACPI_BUFFER parameter to ACPI_DEVICE_INFO. These changes will require an update to all callers of this interface. See the ACPICA Programmer Reference for details. Also, update all invocations of acpi_get_object_info interface Signed-off-by: NBob Moore <robert.moore@intel.com> Signed-off-by: NLin Ming <ming.m.lin@intel.com> Signed-off-by: NLen Brown <len.brown@intel.com>

This patch is part of a larger patch series which will remove the "char bus_id[20]" name string from struct device. The device name is managed in the kobject anyway, and without any size limitation, and just needlessly copied into "struct device". To set and read the device name dev_name(dev) and dev_set_name(dev) must be used. If your code uses static kobjects, which it shouldn't do, "const char *init_name" can be used to statically provide the name the registered device should have. At registration time, the init_name field is cleared, to enforce the use of dev_name(dev) to access the device name at a later time. We need to get rid of all occurrences of bus_id in the entire tree to be able to enable the new interface. Please apply this patch, and possibly convert any remaining remaining occurrences of bus_id. As of version 2.0, ACPI can return 64-bit integers. The current acpi_evaluate_integer only supports 64-bit integers on 64-bit platforms. Currently, /sys/bus/pci/slots/ only exposes hotplug attributes when a hotplug driver is loaded, but PCI slots have attributes such as address, speed, width, etc. that are not related to hotplug at all. Introduce pci_slot as the primary data structure and kobject model. Hotplug attributes described in hotplug_slot become a secondary structure associated with the pci_slot. This patch only creates the infrastructure that allows the separation of PCI slot attributes and hotplug attributes. In this patch, the PCI hotplug core remains the only user of this infrastructure, and thus, /sys/bus/pci/slots/ will still only become populated when a hotplug driver is loaded. A later patch in this series will add a second user of this new infrastructure and demonstrate splitting the task of exposing pci_slot attributes from hotplug_slot attributes. - Make pci_slot the primary sysfs entity. hotplug_slot becomes a subsidiary structure. o pci_create_slot() creates and registers a slot with the PCI core o pci_slot_add_hotplug() gives it hotplug capability - Change the prototype of pci_hp_register() to take the bus and slot number (on parent bus) as parameters. - Remove all the ->get_address methods since this functionality is now handled by pci_slot directly. drivers/pci/hotplug/acpiphp_ibm.c:ibm_find_acpi_device() is not large enough to accommodate data returned by the _CID method executed from acpi_get_object_info(). The previous events patch added a netlink event for every user of the legacy /proc/acpi/event interface. However, some users of /proc/acpi/event are really input events, and they already report their events via the input layer. Introduce a new interface, acpi_bus_generate_netlink_event(), which is explicitly called by devices that want to repoprt events via netlink. This allows the input-like events to opt-out of generating netlink events. In summary: events that are sent via netlink: ac/battery/sbs thermal processor thinkpad_acpi dock/bay events that are sent via input layer: button video hotkey thinkpad_acpi hotkey asus_acpi/asus-laptop hotkey sonypi/sonylaptop Signed-off-by: NZhang Rui <rui.zhang@intel.com> Signed-off-by: NLen Brown <len.brown@intel.com>

Well, first of all, I don't want to change so many files either. What I do: Adding a new parameter "struct bin_attribute *" in the .read/.write methods for the sysfs binary attributes. In fact, only the four lines change in fs/sysfs/bin.c and include/linux/sysfs.h do the real work. But I have to update all the files that use binary attributes to make them compatible with the new .read and .write methods. I'm not sure if I missed any. :( Why I do this: For a sysfs attribute, we can get a pointer pointing to the struct attribute in the .show/.store method, while we can't do this for the binary attributes. I don't know why this is different, but this does make it not so handy to use the binary attributes as the regular ones. So I think this patch is reasonable. :) Who benefits from it: The patch that exposes ACPI tables in sysfs requires such an improvement. All the table binary attributes share the same .read method. Parameter "struct bin_attribute *" is used to get the table signature and instance number which are used to distinguish different ACPI table binary attributes. Without this parameter, we need to offer different .read methods for different ACPI table binary attributes. This is impossible as there are various ACPI tables on different platforms, and we don't know what they are until they are loaded. sysfs is now completely out of driver/module lifetime game. After deletion, a sysfs node doesn't access anything outside sysfs proper, so there's no reason to hold onto the attribute owners. Note that often the wrong modules were accounted for as owners leading to accessing removed modules. This patch kills now unnecessary attribute->owner. Note that with this change, userland holding a sysfs node does not prevent the backing module from being unloaded. For more info regarding lifetime rule cleanup, please read the following message. http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/510293 (tweaked by Greg to not delete the field just yet, to make it easier to merge things properly.) Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
