Under heavy multi-way parallel create workloads, the VFS struggles to write back all the inodes that have been changed in age order. The bdi flusher thread becomes CPU bound, spending 85% of it's time in the VFS code, mostly traversing the superblock dirty inode list to separate dirty inodes old enough to flush. We already keep an index of all metadata changes in age order - in the AIL - and continued log pressure will do age ordered writeback without any extra overhead at all. If there is no pressure on the log, the xfssyncd will periodically write back metadata in ascending disk address offset order so will be very efficient. Hence we can stop marking VFS inodes dirty during transaction commit or when changing timestamps during transactions. This will keep the inodes in the superblock dirty list to those containing data or unlogged metadata changes. However, the timstamp changes are slightly more complex than this - there are a couple of places that do unlogged updates of the timestamps, and the VFS need to be informed of these. Hence add a new function xfs_trans_ichgtime() for transactional changes, and leave xfs_ichgtime() for the non-transactional changes. xfs_truncate_file is only used for truncating quota files. Move it to xfs_qm_syscalls.c so it can be marked static and take advatange of the fact by removing the unused page cache validation and taking the iget into the helper. xfs_iput is just a small wrapper for xfs_iunlock + IRELE. Having this out of line wrapper means the trace events in those two can't track their caller properly. Dmapi support was never merged upstream, but we still have a lot of hooks bloating XFS for it, all over the fast pathes of the filesystem. This patch drops over 700 lines of dmapi overhead. If we'll ever get HSM support in mainline at least the namespace events can be done much saner in the VFS instead of the individual filesystem, so it's not like this is much help for future work. The block number comes from bulkstat based inode lookups to shortcut the mapping calculations. We ar enot able to trust anything from bulkstat, so drop the block number as well so that the correct lookups and mappings are always done. The non-coherent bulkstat versionsthat look directly at the inode buffers causes various problems with performance optimizations that make increased use of just logging inodes. This patch makes bulkstat always use iget, which should be fast enough for normal use with the radix-tree based inode cache introduced a while ago. Pass the larger struct fs_disk_quota to the ->set_dqblk operation so that the Q_SETQUOTA and Q_XSETQUOTA operations can be implemented with a single filesystem operation and we can retire the ->set_xquota operation. The additional information (RT-subvolume accounting and warn counts) are left zero for the VFS quota implementation. Add new fieldmask values for setting the numer of blocks and inodes values which is required for the VFS quota, but wasn't for XFS. On low memory boxes or those with highmem, kernel can OOM before the background reclaims inodes via xfssyncd. Add a shrinker to run inode reclaim so that it inode reclaim is expedited when memory is low. This is more complex than it needs to be because the VM folk don't want a context added to the shrinker infrastructure. Remove the XFS_LOG_FORCE argument which was always set, and the XFS_LOG_URGE define, which was never used. Split xfs_log_force into a two helpers - xfs_log_force which forces the whole log, and xfs_log_force_lsn which forces up to the specified LSN. The underlying implementations already were entirely separate, as were the users. Also re-indent the new _xfs_log_force/_xfs_log_force which previously had a weird coding style. Convert the old xfs tracing support that could only be used with the out of tree kdb and xfsidbg patches to use the generic event tracer. To use it make sure CONFIG_EVENT_TRACING is enabled and then enable all xfs trace channels by: echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/enable or alternatively enable single events by just doing the same in one event subdirectory, e.g. echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/xfs_ihold/enable or set more complex filters, etc. In Documentation/trace/events.txt all this is desctribed in more detail. To reads the events do a cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace Compared to the last posting this patch converts the tracing mostly to the one tracepoint per callsite model that other users of the new tracing facility also employ. This allows a very fine-grained control of the tracing, a cleaner output of the traces and also enables the perf tool to use each tracepoint as a virtual performance counter, allowing us to e.g. count how often certain workloads git various spots in XFS. Take a look at http://lwn.net/Articles/346470/ for some examples. Also the btree tracing isn't included at all yet, as it will require additional core tracing features not in mainline yet, I plan to deliver it later. xfs_dqrele_inode calls xfs_iput to release the ilock and a reference and then also calls IRELE which does a second decrement of the reference count. This leads to a premature freeing of inodes when quotas were turned off while the filesystem was mounted. Thanks to Utako Kusaka for reporting the bug and provinding a good testcase. This patch rips out the XFS ACL handling code and uses the generic fs/posix_acl.c code instead. The ondisk format is of course left unchanged. This also introduces the same ACL caching all other Linux filesystems do by adding pointers to the acl and default acl in struct xfs_inode. The radix tree walks in xfs_sync_inodes_ag and xfs_qm_dqrele_all_inodes() can find inodes that are still undergoing initialisation. Avoid them by checking for the the XFS_INEW() flag once we have a reference on the inode. This flag is cleared once the inode is properly initialised. gcc on ARM warns about an using an uninitialised variable in xfs_qm_dqrele_all_inodes(). This is a real bug, but gcc on x86_64 is not reporting this warning so it went unnoticed. Fix the bug by bring the inode radix tree walk code up to date with xfs_sync_inodes_ag(). With the sync code relocated to the linux-2.6 directory we can use struct inodes directly. If we do the same thing for the quota release code, we can remove vn_grab altogether. While here, convert the VN_BAD() checks to is_bad_inode() so we can remove vnodes entirely from this code. Make releasing all inode dquots traverse the per-ag inode radix trees rather than the mount inode list. This removes another user of the mount inode list. All remaining bhv_vnode_t instance are in code that's more or less Linux specific. (Well, for xfs_acl.c that could be argued, but that code is on the removal list, too). xfs_trans_commit() can return errors when there are problems in the transaction subsystem. They are indicative that the entire transaction may be incomplete, and hence the error should be propagated as there is a good possibility that there is something fatally wrong in the filesystem. Catch and propagate or warn about commit errors in the places where they are currently ignored. When turning off quota, we need to write various transactions to the log to ensure that they are cleanly removed in the case of a crash. We need to check that the transactions hit the disk correctly. If we fail to write the final quota off transaction, we are corrupt in memory and so the only option is to shut the filesystem down at this point.
