This header containing all MSRs and respective bit definitions got exported to userspace in conjunction with the big UAPI shuffle. But, it doesn't belong in the UAPI headers because userspace can do its own MSR defines and exporting them from the kernel blocks us from doing cleanups/renames in that header. Add required definitions to support Local Machine Check Exceptions. Historically, machine check exceptions on Intel x86 processors have been broadcast to all logical processors in the system. Upcoming CPUs will support an opt-in mechanism to request some machine check exceptions be delivered to a single logical processor experiencing the fault. ACPI 6.0 formalizes e820-type-7 and efi-type-14 as persistent memory. Mark it "reserved" and allow it to be claimed by a persistent memory device driver. This definition is in addition to the Linux kernel's existing type-12 definition that was recently added in support of shipping platforms with NVDIMM support that predate ACPI 6.0 (which now classifies type-12 as OEM reserved). mtrr_type_lookup() returns verbatim 0xFF when MTRRs are disabled. This patch defines MTRR_TYPE_INVALID to clarify the meaning of this value, and documents its usage. 'xsave.header::xstate_bv' is a misnomer - what does 'bv' stand for? It probably comes from the 'XGETBV' instruction name, but I could not find in the Intel documentation where that abbreviation comes from. It could mean 'bit vector' - or something else? But how about - instead of guessing about a weird name - we named the field in an obvious and descriptive way that tells us exactly what it does? So rename it to 'xfeatures', which is a bitmask of the xfeatures that are fpstate_active in that context structure. Eyesore like: fpu->state->xsave.xsave_hdr.xstate_bv |= XSTATE_FP; is now much more readable: fpu->state->xsave.header.xfeatures |= XSTATE_FP; Which form is not just infinitely more readable, but is also shorter as well. Introducing KVM_CAP_DISABLE_QUIRKS for disabling x86 quirks that were previous created in order to overcome QEMU issues. Those issue were mostly result of invalid VM BIOS. Currently there are two quirks that can be disabled: 1. KVM_QUIRK_LINT0_REENABLED - LINT0 was enabled after boot 2. KVM_QUIRK_CD_NW_CLEARED - CD and NW are cleared after boot These two issues are already resolved in recent releases of QEMU, and would therefore be disabled by QEMU. Add support for Intel Processor Trace (PT) to kernel's perf events. PT is an extension of Intel Architecture that collects information about software execuction such as control flow, execution modes and timings and formats it into highly compressed binary packets. Even being compressed, these packets are generated at hundreds of megabytes per second per core, which makes it impractical to decode them on the fly in the kernel. This driver exports trace data by through AUX space in the perf ring buffer, which is zero-copy mapped into userspace for faster data retrieval. As far as I can tell, these fields have been set to zero on save and ignored on restore since Linux was imported into git. Rename them '__pad1' and '__pad2' to avoid confusion. This may also allow us to recycle them some day. This also adds a comment clarifying the history of those fields. I'm intentionally avoiding calling either of them '__pad0': the field formerly known as '__pad0' is now 'ss'. The comment in the signal code says that apps can save/restore other segments on their own. It's true that apps can *save* SS on their own, but there's no way for apps to restore it: SYSCALL effectively resets SS to __USER_DS, so any value that user code tries to load into SS gets lost on entry to sigreturn. This recycles two padding bytes in the segment selector area for SS. While we're at it, we need a second change to make this useful. If the signal we're delivering is caused by a bad SS value, saving that value isn't enough. We need to remove that bad value from the regs before we try to deliver the signal. Oddly, the i386 code already got this right. I suspect that 64-bit programs that try to run 16-bit code and use signals will have a lot of trouble without this. This reverts commit: f47233c2 ("x86/mm/ASLR: Propagate base load address calculation") The main reason for the revert is that the new boot flag does not work at all currently, and in order to make this work, we need non-trivial changes to the x86 boot code which we didn't manage to get done in time for merging. And even if we did, they would've been too risky so instead of rushing things and break booting 4.1 on boxes left and right, we will be very strict and conservative and will take our time with this to fix and test it properly. The 64-bit entry code was using six stack slots less by not saving/restoring registers which are callee-preserved according to the C ABI, and was not allocating space for them. Only when syscalls needed a complete "struct pt_regs" was the complete area allocated and filled in. As an additional twist, on interrupt entry a "slightly less truncated pt_regs" trick is used, to make nested interrupt stacks easier to unwind. This proved to be a source of significant obfuscation and subtle bugs. For example, 'stub_fork' had to pop the return address, extend the struct, save registers, and push return address back. Ugly. 'ia32_ptregs_common' pops return address and "returns" via jmp insn, throwing a wrench into CPU return stack cache. This patch changes the code to always allocate a complete "struct pt_regs" on the kernel stack. The saving of registers is still done lazily. "Partial pt_regs" trick on interrupt stack is retained. Macros which manipulate "struct pt_regs" on stack are reworked: - ALLOC_PT_GPREGS_ON_STACK allocates the structure. - SAVE_C_REGS saves to it those registers which are clobbered by C code. - SAVE_EXTRA_REGS saves to it all other registers. - Corresponding RESTORE_* and REMOVE_PT_GPREGS_FROM_STACK macros reverse it. 'ia32_ptregs_common', 'stub_fork' and friends lost their ugly dance with the return pointer. LOAD_ARGS32 in ia32entry.S now uses symbolic stack offsets instead of magic numbers. 'error_entry' and 'save_paranoid' now use SAVE_C_REGS + SAVE_EXTRA_REGS instead of having it open-coded yet again. Patch was run-tested: 64-bit executables, 32-bit executables, strace works. Timing tests did not show measurable difference in 32-bit and 64-bit syscalls. I got HV_STATUS_INVALID_CONNECTION_ID on Hyper-V 2008 R2 when keeping running "rmmod hv_netvsc; modprobe hv_netvsc; rmmod hv_utils; modprobe hv_utils" in a Linux guest. Looks the host has some kind of throttling mechanism if some kinds of hypercalls are sent too frequently. Without the patch, the driver can occasionally fail to load. Also let's retry HV_STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_MEMORY, though we didn't get it before. Removed 'case -ENOMEM', since the hypervisor doesn't return this. CC: "K. Y. Commit: e2b32e67 ("x86, kaslr: randomize module base load address") makes the base address for module to be unconditionally randomized in case when CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE is defined and "nokaslr" option isn't present on the commandline. This is not consistent with how choose_kernel_location() decides whether it will randomize kernel load base. Namely, CONFIG_HIBERNATION disables kASLR (unless "kaslr" option is explicitly specified on kernel commandline), which makes the state space larger than what module loader is looking at. IOW CONFIG_HIBERNATION && CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE is a valid config option, kASLR wouldn't be applied by default in that case, but module loader is not aware of that. Instead of fixing the logic in module.c, this patch takes more generic aproach. It introduces a new bootparam setup data_type SETUP_KASLR and uses that to pass the information whether kaslr has been applied during kernel decompression, and sets a global 'kaslr_enabled' variable accordingly, so that any kernel code (module loading, livepatching, ...) can make decisions based on its value. x86 module loader is converted to make use of this flag. The Processor generation code-named Haswell added MSR_{CORE | GFX | RING}_PERF_LIMIT_REASONS to explain when and how the processor limits frequency. turbostat -v will now decode these bits. Each MSR has an "Active" set of bits which describe current conditions, and a "Logged" set of bits, which describe what has happened since last cleared. This patch improve checks required by Intel Software Developer Manual. - SMM MSRs are not allowed. - microcode MSRs are not allowed. - check x2apic MSRs only when LAPIC is in x2apic mode. - MSR switch areas must be aligned to 16 bytes. - address of first and last byte in MSR switch areas should not set any bits beyond the processor's physical-address width. Also it adds warning messages on failures during MSR switch. These messages are useful for people who debug their VMMs in nVMX. Several hypervisors need MSR auto load/restore feature. We read MSRs from VM-entry MSR load area which specified by L1, and load them via kvm_set_msr in the nested entry. When nested exit occurs, we get MSRs via kvm_get_msr, writing them to L1`s MSR store area. After this, we read MSRs from VM-exit MSR load area, and load them via kvm_set_msr. It turns out that there's a lurking ABI issue. GCC, when compiling this in a 32-bit program: struct user_desc desc = { .entry_number = idx, .base_addr = base, .limit = 0xfffff, .seg_32bit = 1, .contents = 0, /* Data, grow-up */ .read_exec_only = 0, .limit_in_pages = 1, .seg_not_present = 0, .useable = 0, }; will leave .lm uninitialized. This means that anything in the kernel that reads user_desc.lm for 32-bit tasks is unreliable. Revert the .lm check in set_thread_area(). The value never did anything in the first place. Add support of Hardware Managed Performance States (HWP) described in Volume 3 section 14.4 of the SDM. With HWP enbaled intel_pstate will no longer be responsible for selecting P states for the processor. intel_pstate will continue to register to the cpufreq core as the scaling driver for CPUs implementing HWP. In HWP mode intel_pstate provides three functions reporting frequency to the cpufreq core, support for the set_policy() interface from the core and maintaining the intel_pstate sysfs interface in /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate. User preferences expressed via the set_policy() interface or the sysfs interface are forwared to the CPU via the HWP MSR interface. On systems with invvpid instruction support (corresponding bit in IA32_VMX_EPT_VPID_CAP MSR is set) guest invocation of invvpid causes vm exit, which is currently not handled and results in propagation of unknown exit to userspace. Fix this by installing an invvpid vm exit handler. This is CVE-2014-3646.
