There is no point in having a S390 private implementation and there is no point in using the raw monotonic time. The NTP freqeuency adjustment of CLOCK_MONOTONIC is really not doing any harm for the hang check timer. Use ktime_get_ns() for everything and get rid of the timespec conversions. Using the wall clock time for delta time calculations is wrong to begin with because wall clock time can be set from userspace and NTP. Such data wants to be based on clock monotonic. The calculations also are done on a nanosecond basis. Use the nanoseconds based interface right away. The MCT has a nice 64-bit counter. That means that we _can_ register as a 64-bit clocksource and sched_clock. ...but that doesn't mean we should. The 64-bit counter is read by reading two 32-bit registers. That means reading needs to be something like: - Read upper half - Read lower half - Read upper half and confirm that it hasn't changed. That wouldn't be terrible, but: - THe MCT isn't very fast to access (hundreds of nanoseconds). - The clocksource is queried _all the time_. In total system profiles of real workloads on ChromeOS, we've seen exynos_frc_read() taking 2% or more of CPU time even after optimizing the 3 reads above to 2 (see below). The MCT is clocked at ~24MHz on all known systems. That means that the 32-bit half of the counter rolls over every ~178 seconds. This inspired an optimization in ChromeOS to cache the upper half between calls, moving 3 reads to 2. ...but we can do better! Having a 32-bit timer that flips every 178 seconds is more than sufficient for Linux. Let's just use the lower half of the MCT. Times on 5420 to do 1000000 gettimeofday() calls from userspace: * Original code: 1323852 us * ChromeOS cache upper half: 1173084 us * ChromeOS + ldmia to optimize: 1045674 us * Use lower 32-bit only (this code): 1014429 us As you can see, the time used doesn't increase linearly with the number of reads and we can make 64-bit work almost as fast as 32-bit with a bit of assembly code. But since there's no real gain for 64-bit, let's go with the simplest and fastest implementation. Note: with this change roughly half the time for gettimeofday() is spent in exynos_frc_read(). The rest is timer / system call overhead. Also note: this patch disables the use of the MCT on ARM64 systems until we've sorted out how to make "cycles_t" always 32-bit. Really ARM64 systems should be using arch timers anyway. In the clocksource driver, we didn't explicitly enable the clock. it makes the clk reference counter wrong. We didn't encounter any hang issue because the tick's clock input has been open and is shared by some other hardware components, but if we don't enable those components in kernel, in the stage of disabling unused clk in kernel boot, Linux tick hangs. This patch fixes it. it does an explicit prepare and enable to the clock input, and increases the usage counter of the clk. This patch adds a clock source and clock event for the timer found on the Mediatek SoCs. The Mediatek General Purpose Timer block provides five 32 bit timers and one 64 bit timer. Two 32 bit timers are used by this driver: TIMER1: clock events supporting periodic and oneshot events TIMER2: clock source configured as a free running counter The General Purpose Timer block can be run with two clocks. A 13 MHz system clock and the RTC clock running at 32 KHz. This implementation uses the system clock with no clock source divider. The interrupts are shared between the different timers and have to be read back from a register. We just enable one interrupt for the clock event. The clock event timer is used by all cores. If probe fails then we need to call pm_runtime_disable() to balance out the previous pm_runtime_enable() call. Else it will cause unbalanced pm_runtime_enable() call in the succeding probe call. This anomaly was observed when the call to devm_phy_create() failed with -EPROBE_DEFER. Balance out the pm_runtime_enable() call in .remove() as well. Commit 717f3bba, 'serial_core: Fix conditional start_tx on ring buffer not empty' exposes an incorrect assumption in several drivers' start_tx methods; the tx ring buffer can, in fact, be empty when restarting tx while performing flow control. Commit e8099177 ("dm mpath: push back requests instead of queueing") modified multipath_busy() to return true if !pg_ready(). pg_ready() checks the current state of the multipath device and may return false even if a new IO is needed to change the state. Bart Van Assche reported that he had multipath IO lockup when he was performing cable pull tests. Analysis showed that the multipath device had a single path group with both paths active, but that the path group itself was not active. During the multipath device state transitions 'queue_io' got set but nothing could clear it. Clearing 'queue_io' only happens in __choose_pgpath(), but it won't be called if multipath_busy() returns true due to pg_ready() returning false when 'queue_io' is set. As such the !pg_ready() check in multipath_busy() is wrong because new IO will not be sent to multipath target and the multipath state change won't happen. That results in multipath IO lockup. The intent of multipath_busy() is to avoid unnecessary cycles of dequeue + request_fn + requeue if it is known that the multipath device will requeue. Such "busy" situations would be: - path group is being activated - there is no path and the multipath is setup to requeue if no path Fix multipath_busy() to return "busy" early only for these specific situations. There's a race condition between the atomic_dec_and_test(&io->count) in dec_count() and the waking of the sync_io() thread. If the thread is spuriously woken immediately after the decrement it may exit, making the on stack io struct invalid, yet the dec_count could still be using it. Fix this race by using a completion in sync_io() and dec_count(). The commit 2c140a24 ("dm: allow remove to be deferred") introduced a deferred removal feature for the device mapper. When this feature is used (by passing a flag DM_DEFERRED_REMOVE to DM_DEV_REMOVE_CMD ioctl) and the user tries to remove a device that is currently in use, the device will be removed automatically in the future when the last user closes it. Device mapper used the system workqueue to perform deferred removals. However, some targets (dm-raid1, dm-mpath, dm-stripe) flush work items scheduled for the system workqueue from their destructor. If the destructor itself is called from the system workqueue during deferred removal, it introduces a possible deadlock - the workqueue tries to flush itself. Fix this possible deadlock by introducing a new workqueue for deferred removals. We allocate just one workqueue for all dm targets. The ability of dm targets to process IOs isn't dependent on deferred removal of unused targets, so a deadlock due to shared workqueue isn't possible. Also, cleanup local_init() to eliminate potential for returning success on failure.
