For boot-time switching between paging modes, we need to be able to adjust size of physical address space at runtime. As part of making physical address space size variable, we have to make X86_5LEVEL dependent on SPARSEMEM_VMEMMAP. !SPARSEMEM_VMEMMAP configuration doesn't build with variable MAX_PHYSMEM_BITS. For !SPARSEMEM_VMEMMAP SECTIONS_WIDTH depends on MAX_PHYSMEM_BITS: SECTIONS_WIDTH SECTIONS_SHIFT MAX_PHYSMEM_BITS And SECTIONS_WIDTH is used on pre-processor stage, it doesn't work if it's dyncamic. See include/linux/page-flags-layout.h. __PHYSICAL_MASK_SHIFT is used to define the mask that helps to extract physical address from a page table entry. Although real physical address space available may differ between machines, it's safe to use 52 as __PHYSICAL_MASK_SHIFT. Unused bits above log2(MAXPHYADDR) up to bit 51 are reserved and must be 0. EFI is complicated enough that being able to view its pagetables is quite helpful. sme_populate_pgd() and sme_populate_pgd_large() operate on the identity mapping, which means they want virtual addresses to be equal to physical one, without PAGE_OFFSET shift. We also need to avoid paravirtualization call there. Getting this done is tricky. We cannot use usual page table helpers. It forces us to open-code a lot of things. It makes code ugly and hard to modify. We can get it work with the page table helpers, but it requires few preprocessor tricks. - Define __pa() and __va() to be compatible with identity mapping. - Undef CONFIG_PARAVIRT and CONFIG_PARAVIRT_SPINLOCKS before including any file. The TLB invalidation info is allocated on the stack, which might cause it to be unaligned. Since this information may be transferred to different cores for TLB shootdown, this may cause an additional cache line to become shared. While the overhead is likely to be small, the fix is simple. We do not use __cacheline_aligned() since it also defines the section, which is inappropriate for stack variables. The SHA-512 multibuffer code keeps track of the number of blocks pending in each lane. The minimum of these values is used to identify the next lane that will be completed. Unused lanes are set to a large number (0xFFFFFFFF) so that they don't affect this calculation. However, it was forgotten to set the lengths to this value in the initial state, where all lanes are unused. As a result it was possible for sha512_mb_mgr_get_comp_job_avx2() to select an unused lane, causing a NULL pointer dereference. Specifically this could happen in the case where ->update() was passed fewer than SHA512_BLOCK_SIZE bytes of data, so it then called sha_complete_job() without having actually submitted any blocks to the multi-buffer code. This hit a NULL pointer dereference if another task happened to have submitted blocks concurrently to the same CPU and the flush timer had not yet expired. Fix this by initializing sha512_mb_mgr->lens correctly. As usual, this bug was found by syzkaller. SPCR is currently only enabled or ARM64 and x86 can use SPCR to setup an early console. General fixes include updating Documentation & Kconfig (for x86), updating comments, and changing parse_spcr() to acpi_parse_spcr(), and earlycon_init_is_deferred to earlycon_acpi_spcr_enable to be more descriptive. On x86, many systems have a valid SPCR table but the table version is not 2 so the table version check must be a warning. On ARM64 when the kernel parameter earlycon is used both the early console and console are enabled. On x86, only the earlycon should be enabled by by default. Modify acpi_parse_spcr() to allow options for initializing the early console and console separately. Various portions of the kernel, especially per-architecture pieces, need to know if the compiler is building with the stack protector. This was done in the arch/Kconfig with 'select', but this doesn't allow a way to do auto-detected compiler support. When running as Xen pv guest %gs is initialized some time after C code is started. Depending on stack protector usage this might be too late, resulting in page faults. There are two places where core serialization is needed by membarrier: 1) When returning from the membarrier IPI, 2) After scheduler updates curr to a thread with a different mm, before going back to user-space, since the curr->mm is used by membarrier to check whether it needs to send an IPI to that CPU. x86-32 uses IRET as return from interrupt, and both IRET and SYSEXIT to go back to user-space. The IRET instruction is core serializing, but not SYSEXIT. x86-64 uses IRET as return from interrupt, which takes care of the IPI. However, it can return to user-space through either SYSRETL (compat code), SYSRETQ, or IRET. Given that SYSRET{L,Q} is not core serializing, we rely instead on write_cr3() performed by switch_mm() to provide core serialization after changing the current mm, and deal with the special case of kthread -> uthread (temporarily keeping current mm into active_mm) by adding a sync_core() in that specific case. Use the new sync_core_before_usermode() to guarantee this. Document the membarrier requirement on having a full memory barrier in __schedule() after coming from user-space, before storing to rq->curr. It is provided by smp_mb__after_spinlock() in __schedule(). Document that membarrier requires a full barrier on transition from kernel thread to userspace thread. We currently have an implicit barrier from atomic_dec_and_test() in mmdrop() that ensures this. The x86 switch_mm_irqs_off() full barrier is currently provided by many cpumask update operations as well as write_cr3(). Document that write_cr3() provides this barrier. This is needed for guests that will only mitigate Spectre V2 through IBRS+IBPB and will not be using a retpoline+IBPB based approach. To avoid the overhead of saving and restoring the MSR_IA32_SPEC_CTRL for guests that do not actually use the MSR, only start saving and restoring when a non-zero is written to it. No attempt is made to handle STIBP here, intentionally. Filtering STIBP may be added in a future patch, which may require trapping all writes if we don't want to pass it through directly to the guest. Intel processors use MSR_IA32_ARCH_CAPABILITIES MSR to indicate RDCL_NO (bit 0) and IBRS_ALL (bit 1). This is a read-only MSR. By default the contents will come directly from the hardware, but user-space can still override it. The Indirect Branch Predictor Barrier (IBPB) is an indirect branch control mechanism. It keeps earlier branches from influencing later ones. Unlike IBRS and STIBP, IBPB does not define a new mode of operation. It's a command that ensures predicted branch targets aren't used after the barrier. Although IBRS and IBPB are enumerated by the same CPUID enumeration, IBPB is very different. IBPB helps mitigate against three potential attacks: * Mitigate guests from being attacked by other guests. - This is addressed by issing IBPB when we do a guest switch. * Mitigate attacks from guest/ring3->host/ring3. These would require a IBPB during context switch in host, or after VMEXIT. The host process has two ways to mitigate - Either it can be compiled with retpoline - If its going through context switch, and has set !dumpable then there is a IBPB in that path. (Tim's patch: https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10192871) - The case where after a VMEXIT you return back to Qemu might make Qemu attackable from guest when Qemu isn't compiled with retpoline. There are issues reported when doing IBPB on every VMEXIT that resulted in some tsc calibration woes in guest. * Mitigate guest/ring0->host/ring0 attacks. When host kernel is using retpoline it is safe against these attacks. If host kernel isn't using retpoline we might need to do a IBPB flush on every VMEXIT. Even when using retpoline for indirect calls, in certain conditions 'ret' can use the BTB on Skylake-era CPUs. There are other mitigations available like RSB stuffing/clearing. * IBPB is issued only for SVM during svm_free_vcpu(). VMX has a vmclear and SVM doesn't. We need an atomic way to setup pmd page table entry, avoiding races with CPU setting dirty/accessed bits. This is required to implement pmdp_invalidate() that doesn't lose these bits.
