Version 3 of this patch is updated with documentation added to Documentation/ABI. There are no changes to any of the C code from v2 of the patch. In order to support kernel DLPAR of CPU resources we need to provide an interface to add (probe) and remove (release) the resource from the system. This patch Creates new generic probe and release sysfs files to facilitate cpu probe/release. The probe/release interface provides for allowing each arch to supply their own routines for implementing the backend of adding and removing cpus to/from the system. This also creates the powerpc specific stubs to handle the arch callouts from writes to the sysfs files. The creation and use of these files is regulated by the CONFIG_ARCH_CPU_PROBE_RELEASE option so that only architectures that need the capability will have the files created. When a CPU is offlined on POWER currently, we call rtas_stop_self() and hand the CPU back to the resource pool. This path is used for DLPAR which will cause a change in the LPAR configuration which will be visible outside. This patch changes the default state a CPU is put into when it is offlined. On platforms which support ceding the processor to the hypervisor with latency hint specifier value, during a cpu offline operation, instead of calling rtas_stop_self(), we cede the vCPU to the hypervisor while passing a latency hint specifier value. The Hypervisor can use this hint to provide better energy savings. Also, during the offline operation, the control of the vCPU remains with the LPAR as oppposed to returning it to the resource pool. The patch achieves this by creating an infrastructure to set the preferred_offline_state() which can be either - CPU_STATE_OFFLINE: which is the current behaviour of calling rtas_stop_self() - CPU_STATE_INACTIVE: which cedes the vCPU to the hypervisor with the latency hint specifier. The codepath which wants to perform a DLPAR operation can set the preferred_offline_state() of a CPU to CPU_STATE_OFFLINE before invoking cpu_down(). The patch also provides a boot-time command line argument to disable/enable CPU_STATE_INACTIVE. This patch adds needed nodes and properties to support suspend/resume on the MPC8610HPCD boards. There is a dedicated switch (SW9) that is used to wake up the boards. By default the SW9 button is routed to IRQ8, but could be re-routed (via PIXIS) to sreset. With 'no_console_suspend' kernel command line argument specified, the board is also able to wakeup upon serial port input. This reverts commit d0646f7b, as requested by Eric Sandeen. It can basically cause an ext4 filesystem to miss recovery (and thus get mounted with errors) if the journal checksum does not match. Quoth Eric: "My hand-wavy hunch about what is happening is that we're finding a bad checksum on the last partially-written transaction, which is not surprising, but if we have a wrapped log and we're doing the initial scan for head/tail, and we abort scanning on that bad checksum, then we are essentially running an unrecovered filesystem. But that's hand-wavy and I need to go look at the code. We lived without journal checksums on by default until now, and at this point they're doing more harm than good, so we should revert the default-changing commit until we can fix it and do some good power-fail testing with the fixes in place." See http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14354 for all the gory details. Rusty, commit 3ca4f5ca virtio: add virtio IDs file moved all device IDs into a single file. While the change itself is a very good one, it can break userspace applications. For example if a userspace tool wanted to get the ID of virtio_net it used to include virtio_net.h. This does no longer work, since virtio_net.h does not include virtio_ids.h. This patch moves all "#include <linux/virtio_ids.h>" from the C files into the header files, making the header files compatible with the old ones. In addition, this patch exports virtio_ids.h to userspace. Update documentation of cgroups tasks and procs files Document the cgroup.procs file. Clarify the semantics of the cgroup.procs and tasks files. Although the current cgroup.procs interface returns a sorted and uniqified list of pids, potential future performance enhancements could result in those properties being removed - explicitly document this aspect of the API. There are no existing users of cgroup.procs, so compatibility isn't an issue. There are users of the "tasks" file, but none that would appear to break in the event of the sorted property being broken. The standard "libcpuset" explicitly sorts the results of reading from the tasks file, and "libcg" and other users don't appear to care about ordering. Adjust the max_kernel_pages default to a quarter of totalram_pages, instead of nr_free_buffer_pages() / 4: the KSM pages themselves come from highmem, and even on a 16GB PAE machine, 4GB of KSM pages would only be pinning 32MB of lowmem with their rmap_items, so no need for the more obscure calculation (nor for its own special init function). There is no way for the user to switch KSM on if CONFIG_SYSFS is not enabled, so in that case default run to KSM_RUN_MERGE. Update KSM Documentation and Kconfig to reflect the new defaults. It is not currently possible to instruct pktgen to use one selected tx queue. When Robert added multiqueue support in commit 45b270f8, he added an interval (queue_map_min, queue_map_max), and his code doesnt take into account the case of min = max, to select one tx queue exactly. I suspect a high performance setup on a eight txqueue device wants to use exactly eight cpus, and assign one tx queue to each sender. This patchs makes pktgen select the right tx queue, not the first one. Also updates Documentation to reflect Robert changes.
