This patch adds support for the Simtek STK17TA8 timekeeping chip. The STK17TA8 is quite similar to the DS1553, but differs in register layout and in various control bits in the registers. I chose to make this a new driver to avoid confusion in the code and to not get lost in #ifdefs. We now read and write the century byte in the max6900 chip. We probably don't need to do so on Linux-only system, but it's necessary when the chip is shared by another OS that uses the century byte. Various people have expressed surprise that their modular RTC drivers don't seem to work for initializing the system time at boot. Add Texas Instruments TWL92330/Menelaus Power Management chip driver. This includes voltage regulators, Dual slot memory card tranceivers and real-time clock(RTC). The support for RTC is integrated with this driver only; it is not separate module. Passes 'rtctest' on OMAP H4 EVM, other than lack of "periodic" (1/N second) IRQs. System wakeup alarms (from suspend-to-RAM) work too. The battery keeps the RTC active over power off, so once you set clock (rdate/ntpdate/etc, then "hwclock -w") then RTC_HCTOSYS at boot time will behave as expected. When we find a ds1337 or ds1339 with the oscillator powered off, turn it on. If the oscillator fault flag was set, clear it and warn that the clock needs to be set. Use a common warning message ("SET TIME!") whenever the clock needs to be set after oscillator fault (or oscillator enable, if fault is not a separate status). This is a new-style i2c driver for ST M41T80 series RTC chip, derived from works by Alexander Bigga <ab@mycable.de> who wrote the original rtc-m41txx.c based on drivers/i2c/chips/m41t00.c driver. This driver supports M41T8[0-4] and M41ST8[457]. The old m41t00 driver supports M41T00, M41T81 and M41T85(M41ST85). While the M41T00 chip is now supported by rtc-ds1307 driver, this driver does not include support for the chip. Tested on the AT32AP7000/ATSTK1000. Driver does only suport time, wake up and a very simple alarm, because of hardware limitations. Convert rtc-rs5c372 to be a "new style" I2C driver, and update the Kconfig text to be more complete.. Verified on an OMAP H4 development platform, along with a board init patch to declare its rv5c387a device. Only one defconfig -- powerpc/linkstation -- uses this driver; but several other platforms use it, just without defconfig support. Such platforms need to be converted so (a) their I2C adapter driver supports new-style drivers, and (b) board init code declares this I2C device. This updates the rtc-ds1307 driver so that converting it to a "new style" driver (driver model, not legacy i2c model) will involve fewer changes. - Use pointer to i2c_client almost everywhere, so that it's easy to let the i2c core create that object; - Avoid using i2c_client.adapter, since that field is redundant and thus may go away (same object as i2c_client.dev.parent). - Extend type enum to include various RTCs this is expected to work with, and include register support for them. It also cleans up the support for multiple chip types, and fixes a glitch that could appear with an un-initialized RTC. Well, first of all, I don't want to change so many files either. What I do: Adding a new parameter "struct bin_attribute *" in the .read/.write methods for the sysfs binary attributes. In fact, only the four lines change in fs/sysfs/bin.c and include/linux/sysfs.h do the real work. But I have to update all the files that use binary attributes to make them compatible with the new .read and .write methods. I'm not sure if I missed any. :( Why I do this: For a sysfs attribute, we can get a pointer pointing to the struct attribute in the .show/.store method, while we can't do this for the binary attributes. I don't know why this is different, but this does make it not so handy to use the binary attributes as the regular ones. So I think this patch is reasonable. :) Who benefits from it: The patch that exposes ACPI tables in sysfs requires such an improvement. All the table binary attributes share the same .read method. Parameter "struct bin_attribute *" is used to get the table signature and instance number which are used to distinguish different ACPI table binary attributes. Without this parameter, we need to offer different .read methods for different ACPI table binary attributes. This is impossible as there are various ACPI tables on different platforms, and we don't know what they are until they are loaded. sysfs is now completely out of driver/module lifetime game. After deletion, a sysfs node doesn't access anything outside sysfs proper, so there's no reason to hold onto the attribute owners. Note that often the wrong modules were accounted for as owners leading to accessing removed modules. This patch kills now unnecessary attribute->owner. Note that with this change, userland holding a sysfs node does not prevent the backing module from being unloaded. Intel Macs (and possibly other machines) provide a PNP entry for the RTC, but provide no IRQ. As a result the rtc-cmos driver doesn't allow wakeup alarms. If the RTC is located at the legacy ioport range, assume that it's on IRQ 8 unless the tables say otherwise. This fixes a common glitch in how RTC drivers handle two "set alarm" modes, by getting rid of the surprising/hidden one that was rarely implemented correctly (and which could expose nonportable hardware-specific behavior). The glitch comes from the /dev/rtcX logic implementing the legacy RTC_ALM_SET (limited to 24 hours, needing RTC_AIE_ON) ioctl on top of the RTC driver call providing access to the newer RTC_WKALM_SET (without those limitations) by initializing the day/month/year fields to be invalid ... that second mode. Now, since few RTC drivers check those fields, and most hardware misbehaves when faced with invalid date fields, many RTC drivers will set bogus alarm times on those RTC_ALM_SET code paths. (Several in-tree drivers have that issue, and I also noticed it with code reviews on several new RTC drivers.) This patch ensures that RTC drivers never see such invalid alarm fields, by moving some logic out of rtc-omap into the RTC_ALM_SET code and adding an explicit check (which will prevent the issue on other code paths). I finally got around to testing the updated wakeup event hooks for rtc-cmos, and they follow in two patches: - Interface update ... when a simple enable_irq_wake() doesn't suffice, the platform data can hold suspend/resume callback hooks. - ACPI implementation ... provides callback hooks to do ACPI magic, and eliminate the legacy /proc/acpi/alarm file. The interface update could go into 2.6.21, but that's not essential; they will be NOPs on most PCs, without the ACPI stuff. I suspect the ACPI folk may have opinions about how to merge that second patch, and how to obsolete that legacy procfs file. I'd like to see that merge into 2.6.22 if possible... As for how to kick it in ... two ways: - The appended "rtcwake" program; updated since the last time it was posted, it deals much better with timezones and DST. - Write the /sys/class/rtc/.../wakealarm file, then go to sleep. For some reason RTC wake from "swsusp" stopped working on a system where it previously worked; the alarm setting appears to get clobbered. That magic comes in two basic flavors: - Straightforward: enable_irq_wake(), the way it'd work on most SOC chips; or generally with system sleep states which don't disable core IRQ logic. - Roundabout, using non-IRQ platform hooks. This is needed with ACPI and one almost-clone chip which uses a special wakeup-only alarm. (That's the RTC used on Footbridge boards, FWIW, which don't do PM in Linux.) A separate patch implements those hooks for ACPI platforms, so that rtc_cmos can issue system wakeup events (and its sysfs "wakealarm" attribute works on at least some systems).
