All architectures have CONFIG_GENERIC_KERNEL_THREAD CONFIG_GENERIC_KERNEL_EXECVE __ARCH_WANT_SYS_EXECVE None of them have __ARCH_WANT_KERNEL_EXECVE and there are only two callers of kernel_execve() (which is a trivial wrapper for do_execve() now) left. Use the mapping of Elf_[SPE]hdr, Elf_Addr, Elf_Sym, Elf_Dyn, Elf_Rel/Rela, ELF_R_TYPE() and ELF_R_SYM() to either the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version into asm-generic/module.h for all arches bar MIPS. Also, use the generic definition mod_arch_specific where possible. To this end, I've defined three new config bools: (*) HAVE_MOD_ARCH_SPECIFIC Arches define this if they don't want to use the empty generic mod_arch_specific struct. (*) MODULES_USE_ELF_RELA Arches define this if their modules can contain RELA records. This causes the Elf_Rela mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate_add() to be defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message. (*) MODULES_USE_ELF_REL Arches define this if their modules can contain REL records. This causes the Elf_Rel mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate() to be defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message. Note that it is possible to allow both REL and RELA records: m68k and mips are two arches that do this. With this, some arch asm/module.h files can be deleted entirely and replaced with a generic-y marker in the arch Kbuild file. Additionally, I have removed the bits from m32r and score that handle the unsupported type of relocation record as that's now handled centrally. Commit b789ef51 ("slub: Add cmpxchg_double_slab()") tests for cmpxchg_double support in the SLUB code and it breaks UML builds with SLUB. Since UML does not support checking for CPU features, disable CMPXCHG_DOUBLE just like CMPXCHG_LOCAL is disabled for UML. Commit 0954828f ("kconfig: replace KERNELVERSION usage by the mainmenu's prompt") made the kernel version disappear from the generated .config file when configuring for UML. As UML's Kconfig doesn't have a mainmenu, kconfig falls back to the default string "Linux Kernel Configuration". Add a suitable mainmenu to the main UML Kconfig file to fix this. Commit 8a5ec0ba "Lockless (and preemptless) fastpaths for slub" makes use of this_cpu_cmpxchg_double() which needs this_cpu_cmpxchg16b_emu() on x86_64. Implementing cmpxchg16b emulation for UML would introduce too much complexity. So just disable it. HAVE_AOUT doesn't quite do the same thing as the recently removed ARCH_SUPPORTS_AOUT config option. That was set even on platforms where binfmt_aout isn't supported, although it's not entirely clear why. So it's best just to introduce a new symbol, handled consistently with other similar HAVE_xxx symbols; with a simple 'select' in the arch Kconfig. Introduce GENERIC_FIND_FIRST_BIT and GENERIC_FIND_NEXT_BIT in lib/Kconfig, defaulting to off. An arch that wants to use the generic implementation now only has to use a select statement to include them. I added an always-y option (X86_CPU) to arch/x86/Kconfig.cpu and used that to select the generic search functions. This way ARCH=um SUBARCH=i386 automatically picks up the change too, and arch/um/Kconfig.i386 can therefore be simplified a bit. ARCH=um SUBARCH=x86_64 does things differently, but still compiles fine. It seems that a "def_bool y" always wins over a "def_bool n"? Calculate TASK_SIZE at run-time by figuring out the host's VMSPLIT - this is needed on i386 if UML is to run on hosts with varying VMSPLITs without recompilation. TASK_SIZE is now defined in terms of a variable, task_size. This gets rid of an include of pgtable.h from processor.h, which can cause include loops. On i386, task_size is calculated early in boot by probing the address space in a binary search to figure out where the boundary between usable and non-usable memory is. This tries to make sure that a page that is considered to be in userspace is, or can be made, read-write. I'm concerned about a system-global VDSO page in kernel memory being hit and considered to be a userspace page. On x86_64, task_size is just the old value of CONFIG_TOP_ADDR. A bunch of config variable are gone now. CONFIG_TOP_ADDR is directly replaced by TASK_SIZE. NEST_LEVEL is gone since the relocation of the stubs makes it irrelevant. All the HOST_VMSPLIT stuff is gone. All references to these in arch/um/Makefile are also gone. I noticed and fixed a missing extern in os.h when adding os_get_task_size. Note: This has been revised to fix the 32-bit UML on 64-bit host bug that Miklos ran into. Mark arches that support A.OUT format by including the following in their master Kconfig files: config ARCH_SUPPORTS_AOUT def_bool y This should also be set if the arch provides compatibility A.OUT support for an older arch, for instance x86_64 for i386 or sparc64 for sparc. I've guessed at which arches don't, based on comments in the code, however I'm sure that some of the ones I've marked as 'yes' actually should be 'no'. The calculation of CONFIG_STUB_CODE and CONFIG_STUB_DATA didn't take into account anything but 3G/1G and 2G/2G, leaving the other vmsplits out in the cold. I'd rather not duplicate the four known host vmsplit cases for each of these symbols. I'd also like to calculate them based on the highest userspace address. The Kconfig language seems not to allow calculation of hex constants, so I moved this to as-layout.h. CONFIG_STUB_CODE, CONFIG_STUB_DATA, and CONFIG_STUB_START are now gone. In their place are STUB_CODE, STUB_DATA, and STUB_START in as-layout.h. i386 and x86_64 seem to differ as to whether an unadorned constant is an int or a long, so I cast them to unsigned long so they can be printed consistently. However, they are also used in stub.S, where C types don't work so well. So, there are ASM_ versions of these constants for use in stub.S. I also ifdef-ed the non-asm-friendly portion of as-layout.h. With this in place, most of the rest of this patch is changing CONFIG_STUB_* to STUB_*, except in stub.S, where they are changed to ASM_STUB_*. defconfig has the old symbols deleted. I also print these addresses out in case there is any problem mapping them on the host. The two stub.S files had some trailing whitespace, so that is cleaned up here. This fixes UML on hosts with non-standard VM splits. We had changed the config variable that controls UML behavior on such hosts, but not propogated the change everywhere. In particular, the values of STUB_CODE and STUB_DATA relied on the old variable. I also reformatted the HOST_VMSPLIT_3G help to make it more standard. Spotted by uml@flonatel.org. Now that various memory splits are enabled, add a config option allowing the user to compile UML for its need - HOST_2G_2G allowed to choose either 3G/1G or 2G/2G, and enabling it reduced the usable virtual memory. Detecting this at run time should be implemented in the future, but we must make the stop-gap measure work well enough (this is valid in _many_ cases).
